We decided on a staycation to La Jolla for the 4th of July, intending to see the famed La Jolla Cove Fireworks. But one of the wealthiest little sections of California could not raise the funds for the event. This is NOT the hotel's fault. The hotel itself is a 1913 vintage gem with two associated "hotels". They are a mixed bag, room 138 has a large number of A/C compressors above it hence no sleep for my wife and very little for me. After raising the issue with the desk we were moved to room 236 in a 1925 vintage annex. Room 236 is large, well kept and except for rather anemic air conditioning a lovely place to stay. Above it is a lounge and roof open to occupants with quite a lovely view. Their restaurant 910 is beyond reproach, excellent food, prepared with an eye toward appearance as well as taste. Yes, it is expensive but if you want cheap I am sure there is a McDonalds somewhere in La Jolla.
Mattresses are a bit too soft for my taste, but obviously that is a matter of opinion and others might object to what I find great.
Both rooms have cooking facilities, stove, fridge, sink, china and cutlery, and cooking utensils as they were both "apartment hotels" which were common in the 20's and 30's for people coming to spend an extended stay. So if you want to save many dimes Vons Supermarket is only about 6 blocks away and quite an easy walk.
Very close to the ocean, about 100 yards +/-, heated swimming pool, beautiful lobby, and on the whole quite a nice hotel. Yes, an older property with a few problems but worth the price to stay in a beautiful place.
