Much thought was put into making this Asian influenced garden retreat a beautiful place in which to take a break.

October 2015 was the fourth annual Festival of the Lights, and the turnout had built so that thousands attended. I waited in line for 45 minutes to get in, and I had purchased a ticket in advance. The crowd was mostly very attractive young people in their 20's and 30's attending with friends and dates... many came over from San Francisco. It was great fun seeing all the trees and gardens lit up at night. The ingenuity of Oakland was on display, as well as a range of artwork. It was definitely the happening place to be that weekend.

I visited late summer. Gardens were in full bloom. Seating spaces were conducive to meditation, reading, resting. Very well laid out and even though there were several summer childrens groups visiting, their was not interference for a quiet walking visit.

I love this garden area in the middle of Lake Merritt. They have some beautiful displays and great classes on certain weekends.

This is a hidden gem- check out the bonsais. They even offer classes to teach you how to make them. It's great to check out- and I always enjoy a walk around the lake
