My wife and I stayed at Asilomar Conference Grounds for one night at a rate of about $118 including breakfast. The location in Pacific Grove is on state property next to the ocean. You have to walk across a boardwalk in sand dunes and cross a road to get to the beach. There are deer on the property.
This is not a deluxe property in terms of rooms or food. It is not camping as you have heated rooms and nice beds and bathroom..they just are of older design with some updating. You go for its location and quietness in a forest like environment next to the ocean. Rooms are old fashioned but quite acceptable, at least the one we had. It was bigger than many hotel rooms I have stayed in. Our room had a porch with chairs. Amenities are minimal.
Breakfast is a buffet style and served as you walk through a line. Typical scrambled eggs, bacon and potatoes along with fruits and cereals. Coffee is on table and you have to ask for tea. You sit with a small group of independent travelers. Around you are also people attending conferences at their own tables. Food is only average. I would not buy lunch or dinner here, which is an option.

Great place in Pacific Grove. Log cabins with apartments. They were kind of old style but very clean. They are actually remodeling the place. You can walk to the beach on a beautiful boardwalk along the sand. They have bikes that you can rent and that's very nice. The breakfast was ok, not much to tell about it. Great place for seniors and family with kids.

Stunning location - if a little hard to find after dark (even when you do make it through the gate). We had a plumbing problem with our room on arrival and there was a maintenance crew working on it within 10 minutes! The room was comfortable, spacious and relaxing - if a little hard work getting suitcases up the stairs to the door!

Meals were simple, healthy and plentiful, and the service at meals was friendly and efficient. The cafeteria style service works well for conferences. Reception staff were also extremely helpful (for example locating stores in the locality and planning our onward journey).

A fridge in the room would be useful but we realise there is an environmental cost to this. Lack of TV was a real blessing, as was the proximity of restful beach and dune walks.

The coffee shop in the social hall was a great source of early morning caffeine - if a little idiosyncratic.

I stayed at the Asilomar Conference Grounds (it is a CA State Park too) in October 2011 for a three day conference. The management of the Conference Grounds had just changed hands before I stayed, so things seemed a little disjointed when I arrived. I unfortunately arrived late, so I got the joy of trying to find my building/room in the pitch darkness of Asilomar with a cruddy map and not so clear directions from the staff. I ended up lugging my luggage up a bunch of stairs, that I later found I could have avoided had I just exited through a different door, and this was after driving around for nearly 1/2 and hour to find the parking garage/area closest to where I was staying.

The room in the Willow was at best disappointing and at worst just plain gross. The bathroom had been redone and the bed was new but everything else was how shall I say 'vintage' and not in a good way. There was mold on the carpet and drapes and the carpet felt 'moist' when I walked around barefoot. There was no A/C, which makes sense next to the coast, but the room was stuffy and had no fan or any way to circulate air except open the windows that opened right onto a sidewalk. I ended up getting sick right after staying a venture to say it was probably the mold that contributed to it.

Then there is the odd meals system at Asilomar. The breakfast was okay, though a little selection or maybe an omelet bar might have been nice. I can't say much for lunch since I got food poisoning and even though I told the staff they didn't seem terribly concerned like people got sick from their food all the time. It wasn't just me since many people in my conference group mentioned feeling ill after lunch.

Basically I will probably never visit Asilomar to stay again. The only redeeming quality is the lovely beach, otherwise the place is run down and operated in a very odd manor...kind of like a sad summer camp for grownups.

Room Tip: Besides not staying, there are two buildings with remodeled rooms I'm told are much nicer. The...

Most people become acquainted with the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California when they attend a conference. It is situated on the Pacific ocean adjacent to the Pebble Beach golf course. It was first created as a YWCA camp. It has been recently updated. Wireless internet is now available in your room! There is a new cafe in the main building (lodge) which serves various, coffees, teas, pastries, wine and beer! The dining hall is also being completely renovated. The staff are courteous and helpful

Those who have stayed here will tell you of their long walks or runs along the beach. There is also a heated swimming pool. The food at the central dining hall is very good and certainly better than any camp you stayed in as a child.

The accommodations vary from historic early 20th century buildings (with wood bringing fireplaces in the entrance lounge) to more modern late 20 century rooms that are similar to any mid-priced hotel, but often have either views of the ocean or wood burning fireplaces in your room. There are no TVs or televisions in the rooms, but why would you want to watch TV? There are deer everywhere, as well as seals and otters in the ocean.

Monterey and Carmel are 10 minutes away by car. Nearby restaurants offer many different cuisines, with quality being very good to excellent.

If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive place to stay that is away from tourist experience of Cannery Row, then this might be the ticket. It will also take you back to the times you spent at camp or some relative's summer retreat. Besides with the green fees charged by Pebble Beach, you'll want to save money somehow.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in Spindrift if you want to be as close as possible to the ocean.
