Owner description: In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France. In 1938, he traveled to France and returned with André Tchelistcheff, the famed viticulturist and innovative enologist. Tchelistcheff introduced cold fermentation for white wines, malolactic fermentation for reds and aging red wines in small, French oak barrels. He also insisted that the de Latour family's private Cabernet wine-"Private Reserve"-be bottled and sold as the winery's flagship offering. The result was the inaugural 1936 vintage of the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was destined to become Napa Valley's first "cult" Cabernet. Today we continue to innovate to craft wines in our bold, classic style. We have become a leader in clonal research, and our BV Clone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are highly acclaimed. Most recently we completed a new state-of-the-art winery within one of our original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional, wine-the longtime benchmark of Rutherford Cabernet.

We stopped into BV on a whim before meeting friends for lunch. We are so glad we did! Our host, Michael Gallardo, was amazing. He was so entertaining he made every other vineyard we visited a snooze fest. The wines were amazing, and can only be found at the winery. You can find their coastal selections anywhere, but if you want their delish napa valley wines, you have to buy it ther. - worth the trip and a must stop while in Napa Valley.

Wine - OK, Service - terrible
We noticed others were being greeted at the door with a small glass of wine. However, we were not greeted or offered anything until my husband inquired about it. It was not super crowded but we were not promptly served by any means. My husband and I were there with our 21 and 22 year old sons so perhaps this is why? The wine was OK. We actually bought a half-bottle of the port. Very much had a corporate atmosphere. The help was not at all personable. For great service head to Sequoia Grove and visit Jayne (I think that was her name).

This summer we've spent one week in Napa, trying lots of wine. It's not our first trip to Napa, but it was our first time here at BV.
When it comes about wine, we like heavy, full-bodied red Cabs. But we keep our minds open to other good wine (which we found here in Napa).

BV is quite a busy place and has nicely done tasting room. But it was hard to get some good spot at the bar without bumping in other guests too much. But that's alright. The service was ok. No ups or downs here.
Since we already had quite some wine today (and planning on having more later) we just went for the "regular" tasting menu. That was four Cab. Sauvignons for 20$, a good price.
It was pretty decent wine. Some of them were a little on the lighter side, compared to other red Cabs. The 2005/06 Cab. we liked the most. But it did cost 65$.
Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to spend that amount for a nice bottle (or more, no problem...). But compared to other red Cabs here in Napa, we thought it was a little overpriced... They have some decent wine here, and the Reserve tasting might have better ones (a reason to come back), but the ones we tried were good, but didn't "wow" us enough. Good, but not great.

But, like mentioned, we might come back anyway for the Reserve tasting.

Great tasting experience in the Visitor's Center. When we walked inside, we were immediately welcomed and handed a complimentary tasting. BV offers three tasting options in the main tasting room - whites only, reds only and cabernets - a nice surprise for our group with differing tastes. Our attendant was hospitable and knowledgeable. He even offered us a complimentary tasting of a wine that was not on the tasting menu but was on sale that day.

I also love that BV offers a wide variety of wines including some unique varietals not usually found in Napa - a Sangiovese, Tempranillo and some good blends.

We plan to go back soon to visit the Reserve Room.

*2 for 1 tasting coupons are available on the BV website!
