Taste of China is quality food, it is probably one of the best chinese fast food restaurants in Southern California, but you have probably never heard of it. The restaurant was started in November 1996, it is family owned and has been running for almost 20 years. It is located in the south side of town in San Clemente and is only about a block away from the exit. As soon as you walk in you witness the food is behind the glass as the smell leaks out urging your hunger and calling your name. Taste of China is comfortable and is nothing fancy, the entire space is decorated with asian decorations, including sun umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. There is even a patio where you can eat your meal outside on umbrella covered tables, if the weather permits.
The name Taste of China explains itself as every menu item is homemade and traditional Chinese food. The menu item that just shouts China is their two types of Orange Chicken and Spicy Orange Chicken. Probably the most ordered and favored item by most customers and first time visitors. Both have a sweet, addicting, orange-citrus smell, a glazed shine, golden dark orange glow and cloudlike appearance as you can hear the sizzle of the sauce. These qualities alone just draw you in to order them and claim this treasure for yourself. It is probably my favorite order when I go here, as after the first time I tried it, every time it lures me back as though it is a drug. The Spicy Orange Chicken not only matches its sibling but more, the red pepper flakes add a kick of spice to the flavor. As soon as you bite in, you feel the crunch of the bread wrap, then taste a sweet orange flavor as well as a hot taste from the pepper. It leaves a burning on your lips as you continue to eat your meal. The item is quite perfect in texture; soft on the outside and soft but crunchy on the inside, but warm and delicious all the way through but can sometimes have too much bread.
It goes on, there is a menu item to satisfy any taste, there are many different flavors for all types of meats. Whether you like Fish, Chicken, Beef, or Pork, they have it all in all different types of preparations and flavors. Some other menu items include Teriyaki Chicken, Black-Pepper Chicken, Broccoli Beef, Mushroom Steak, Sweet Pork and more. So many different options to choose from. The Broccoli Beef has a sweet flavor that would attract someone who even does not like vegetables. Taste of China even has items to serve and satisfy vegans, vegetarians, or even someone just in a vegi-mood. The person needs only to ask the employe and they will make a custom stirfry with the vegetables of their liking. All menu entrees can be sampled, all you have to do is ask the employee behind the counter and they will give you a toothpick with the item. Even after you order, you can sample for what you might like the next time you attend.
As you can see, Taste of China serves all types of people in all types of crowds. The family setting attracts closeby families and friends who go for a casual meal. Some very common customers also include some Marines from the local Camp Pendleton who can often be spotted dining for dinner. The restaurant provides a family, informal home feeling that makes you feel welcomed and comfortable. However it may not be appropriate for official or business meetings as it is quite small and not very fancy. Your meal comes in a plastic box like meal plate on a tray and you have plastic silverware. It’s more of an informal sit-down type of fast food restaurant and you may want to plan/ dine somewhere else for official business. Otherwise you could come alone or perhaps with a group of friends another time.
The quality of the food is more than the cost which is affordable and fair. Almost as though a less expensive Panda Express. There are two types of plates, combo one and combo two. Combo one is $6.30 including a choice of entree and two sides. Combo two is 7.90 including two sides and two entrees. Neither of these items include Tax or a Drink which varies on choosing. I would recommend Combo one as it is cheaper. It is easier to finish as the food seems to fill quickly. Combo two is just too much food but might be good to share, however with a single consumer, might be left with leftovers as the box will take up a lot of room in your fridge. So go with combo one and get a easier satisfaction. You can get your meal to stay or go and both take the same amount of time.
Overall, Taste of China is a magnificent place that makes you feel at home. I would advise taking all ages of friends, family members, or even visiting tourists. There is something there for everyone to enjoy and love. Once you start to attend, you will be hooked. Even go on a hot a day and order and ice boba drink, slush, or smoothie to cool you down. So many flavors to choose from. All sorts of things to try there and a friendly family run staff that will become automatic friends once you get a chance to talk to them. So go and enjoy, you will visit again as the flavor and food will hook you like a fish on a rod!
