A nice hostel with an interesting bunch of people and very attentive and welcoming staff. The staff both make sure the stay is comfortable as well as offering help to try and make it enjoyable. Breakfast is served on a donation basis and is tasty.

I was really lucky to find this hostel, in a really good location between LA and San Francisco. Really felt like a proper hostel, as always with HI with a large emphasis on sustainability and consideration for others staying there. Really impressed.

Stayed here with my boyfriend in a private room. The hostel is nice enough and offers very good value for money but our room needed redecorating and was very small. It was located next door to the reception desk so you could hear everything that was going on from 7am in the morning. Breakfast was limited to pancakes (which neither my boyfriend or I eat). Not really much community spirit, would be good to have more events in the evening.

The Hosteling International hostel in San Luis Obispo is a pretty good deal, as long as you're OK with a no-frills room & facilities.

It's conveniently located very close to the Amtrak train station and walking distance to the downtown area for restaurants, bars, clubs & other assorted nightlife options.

We stayed in a private room with a semi-private bathroom (it was also located off the kitchen/dining area for general use, so there was another door that could be locked from inside the bathroom. The bathroom & the furniture in the room were pretty old & not in the best condition. The windows in our room were also not fully functional.

The biggest disappointment was that it was advertised (and told to us on the phone) to have an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast in the mornings, starting at a specific time. However, at the appointed time, we were in the kitchen/dining area & there were no staff members present. After about 30 minutes of waiting, someone finally wandered in & starting mixing up some pancake batter. When the batter was mixed, he simply left the common area, telling us that we had to cook the pancakes ourselves. Of course, we were perfectly able to do this, but it's not at all what we had expected (nor what was publicized).

By San Luis Obispo standards, though, it's relative inexpensive & located in a nice (and seemingly safe) residential neighborhood. But this hostel really needs some updating & renovation!

In preparation for a four month backpacking trek across Europe, my brother and I stayed overnight in Hostel Obispo, which is only about a twenty minute drive from our home. If all the hostels we stay in in Europe are as comfortable as Hostel Obispo, we will have nothing to worry about. The beds were clean (guests were asked to strip their beds before departing), the rooms were quiet, and the staff were friendly. We were able to partake in quiet conversation and piano playing while another group enjoyed poker over drinks. In other words, the common room was all accommodating. In the morning we walked less than a mile to reach downtown, where we enjoyed coffee and pastries at the most excellent Bello Mundo Cafe.
