We went for dim sum based on the good reviews and were very disappointed. There is NO comparison to the dim sum restaurants in major cites throughout the US. The choices were few, the quality was poor and the prices were high.

We got to this place at 5pm on a Sunday, 30 minutes later it was full. The parking is conveniently located next to the restaurant.

The food came quickly and steaming hot. It was delicious and must be shared.

First the negatives: We had reservations but had to wait. The restaurant was very busy and once seated had to wait nearly half an hour before a server approached. She was apologetic. It seems the staff was being pushed to accommodate as meany tables as possible.

The positives: We tried new dishes and the food was very tasty. Even the fortune cookies were fresh and crunchy. Roasted duck was amazing! If you have not eaten here lately, it is worth revisiting. Patience is the key.

Looking for a table anywhere in Santa Barbara late on a Saturday afternoon is not easy. China Pavillion had a table and we just walked in. Service was excellent. Meal for 4 with a bottle of wine just under $200 with tip. We passed on the typical appetizers and opted instead to share an eggplant dish served in a wonderful soy sauce concoction. It got us started well, and took the edge off our hunger without having something fried to dampen our appetites too much. We then had Peking duck for 4, nicely served table side where they quickly wrapped pieces if crispy, moist duck with a mild sauce, green onions and a veg of some type in crepe-like wrappers. Each person also got a crispy drumstick. We then had miso fish and ginger beef on steamed rice. No one felt overly stuffed, but we did not need dessert to feel satisfied.

I first dined here with my husband and a friend at the end of December. It was a busy holiday time and the restaurant was overflowing with people. Our various dishes were well-prepared for the most part, but some were overly and unnecessarily salty. Altogether, however, we were pleased -- and enjoyed the vegetarian pot stickers and Moo Shu Chicken and pancakes. The restaurant has more of a restaurant feel than many of the local Chinese restaurants -- table cloths. wine glasses on the table, and service paced well enough to enjoy a glass of wine with your meal. Based on this 4-star experience, we returned in February and ordered some similar dishes and some new ones. The food was not as well-prepared as at our first dinner. But still we considered it promising and returned the following month when we had a craving for Chinese food. We called in advance to make a dinner reservation and requested a window booth. Our reservation was for 9 pm and when we made the reservation we were told that they were accepting dinner reservations that evening until 9:30. We arrived on time, in fact, slightly earlier than 9 pm so as to not have a hurried dinner. The restaurant was just about empty when we arrived. We were asked -- not in a very pleasant way, whether we had a reservation. Yes, of course, we did, but one would think they would have been delighted to serve two more diners on what was a slow night. Instead we were given the impression that they would have preferred that we had not come so that the staff could have had their dinner and leave earlier. The food was poor from start to finish, and the finish came quickly. We were pushed through our meal. All in all, from our three experiences dining here in the course of basically three months, we have decided to scratch this restaurant from our list of dining spots in Santa Barbara. One remembers the experience of dining as much as the food that is eaten. This restaurant could improve both.
