“Santa Barbara life.”

Reviewed 22 December 2017 via mobile

Nice easy scenic drive along the coast. Visiting different neighbourhoods near the water and out to the mountains. Surprised by the difference of architecture of homes in different neighbourhoods..
Looks like a nice place to live.

The scenery is stunning, and we did part of the tour on a shark tour. Part land, part water, definitely a nice, relaxing, different way to see the sights. We did not complete the entire drive, so I have to return.

We took part of this drive and it was beautiful. Beautiful views, beautiful homes and well worth doing!

Very restful, intellectually surprising, and inspiring views in every direction. Walk and remember that LIFE GOES BY IN SECONDS!!!! Do not waste it on petty, narcissistic people and petty concerns.

Drive through up to the promontory and view one of the most SPECTACULAR vistas of the coastline, Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. Walk past the enormous personal pyramids and mausoleums and read some of the funniest and most charming comments about life anywhere. I am revived walking through these lovely memorials. This gorgeous setting is at the south-end of the "Scenic Drive" just as you "turn the curve" to head into Montecito (where I grew up).

I grew up very near this lovely place next the Child's Estate (name after the wonderful, warm, wealthy woman who loved Santa Barbara and donated the land and NOT the clunky, dull name of the Santa Barbara Zoo! Also this zoo was for small animals and NOT elephants that are there now). I rode my horse to the cemetery gates and I learned to drive my first car as a teenager in the 1960s in this cemetery.

Very pleasant, helpful staff and their Spanish--Mudejar art-inspired mediation chapel contains STUNNING MOSAICS with historical significance and if you think that "today's art" is communicating--in some cases, think again. Sit and SEE!

The gracious and beloved movie actor with the most beautiful voice ever captured on film and sound recording, is buried up on the bluff: Ronald Coleman. He owned the famous San Ysidro Ranch when it was so much more a relaxed retreat and where I rode my horse (remember, you old Santa Barbarans--The Plow and Angel Pub? What about the Somerset Restaurant on Coast Village?), instead of today's pretentious, stupidly expensive, status symbols. Mr. Coleman's tombstone is as elegant and eloquent about death as one could have.

This was not our idea of a "scenic" drive. The route was poorly marked with few stopping / vista points. If you were wanting to real estate it was perfect. We had hope to get some great views of the sea and drive up into the mountains a little but the map provided at the visitors centre was disappointing. The one good thing was the stop we made at the Old Mission. This is worth a visit and is very reasonably priced.
