I'd rather stay somewhere with a better view in Arenal

Good hotel, good food (expensive), good pool, room just ok needs work, bed below average but looks nice, view sub par for area, Rio Celeste just ok hotel didn't utilize a view in that direction, restaurant had no view. Hotel provided transportation service was a crappy old Van, Good relaxing spot in the jungle to view wildlife we saw lots of toucans and monkeys.

Dear Mike0987654,

Thank you for your review, our location is next to the Volcan Tenorio National Park, about a 90-minute drive from La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano area. We are immersed in a rainforest, and main attraction are the crystalline blue waters of the Rio Celeste River, and a visit to the park where two rivers meet creating chemical reaction that causes coloring of the water, ending in a magnificent light clue waterfall. We are happy to hear you relaxed while with us and enjoyed the wildlife.

Sincerely,

The Team at Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel

The Rio is as blue as it looks you won't be disappointed!!
The hotel rooms as just wonderful and we found the 'outdoor' shower an experience.
We stayed here during the Easter hols and it was a quiet week for them but all the better for us!
Food was amazing tasty local spicy or plain.
Service was fantastic especially our waiter Graby
The tour of the volcano as organidb sed by Pura Aventura was perfect. Just our family and a very friendly and knowledgeable young guide who went at our pace and told/showed us some amazing rainforest facts - the boys were enthralled!
Photos are from the album I made when we returned!

I found this place through a groupon and booked it almost immediately. I did my research and read the reviews and found everything to be very true. The staff was excellent, extremely accommodating and make you feel like family. The grounds are incredible, you can't ask for a better hideaway around, nothing else compares.

It is about 3.5-4 hours from San Jose with multiple routes. We had a bridge closed on our trip and had to find another route. Our car had a portable wi-fi in it so we were able to review the maps to find our way around it. The last 20km are very rocky and steep, it is recommeded to get 4wd.

We hiked in Tenorio National Park one day and drove down to Arenal and La Fortuna another day. It is beautiful scenery and countryside.

Dear Forrest H,

So happy to read that reviews convinced you to give us a try, we really appreciate your comment and all the others our guests share, definitely helpful to us and our travelers. If coming from La Fortuna area, bumpy road is the last 7 kilometers, if coming from Guanacaste province, Liberia airport, there are only a couple of kilometers left of bumpy roads, and being worked now. Improvements are being made every week. Please come back and let us take care of you again and revisit the scenery you so enjoyed. Relax with a drink by the pool or a massage at the spa, or be adventurous while tubing down the river or hiking up the trails. We look forward to hosting you again very soon,

The Rio Celeste Hideaway Team

The rooms were unbelievable (in a very good way). The staff were friendly and helpful and the facilities spotlessly clean. We were part of a small tour, and I believe everyone enjoyed their stay at Rio Celeste Hideaway. We really enjoyed the night chorus of frogs on the way back to our casita from the restaurant.

Room tip: I would recommend a torch for any of the rooms, though I am sure the hotel would provide one if asked.

Everything was very nice about this place except no WIFI in our room. The place was gorgeous The staff was excellent. Google maps took us down the 11k VERY, VERY rocky road. There is a much better way (only 4k of much less rocks). Take route 6 all the way to the town of Upala and head south on Route 4. You come to an intersection (road not on Gooogle maps) next to a soccer field on your left. Turn R at the intersection and drive the 4 K to the hotel. Although a longer distance the time is the same and your car and back will think you.

Dear Docrbud01.

Thank you for your comments, we completely agree! Apps such as Google Maps or Waze will sometimes lead you on gravel roads to save a couple of minutes on the journey, not worth it at all. Please contact us next time you visit to give you an updated status on road repairs, and which area you are visiting is us from to give you the best way to reach us. We also pleased to report that all casitas have wifi access now. Please visit us again very soon.

This place is amazing!! From San Jose the trip is about 4 hours and the roads are very curvy. My girlfriend felt a bit sick on the way, it's not an easy drive, but it's worth it. Also, I recommend a 4WD car. The last section of road to the hotel is not paved and I imagine in rainy season it might be a bit tough. You can do it with 2WD, but definitely need an SUV. You'll punish a car with lower clearance.
The first thing you notice as soon as you pull-in and park your car is the level of attention. Immediately, someone came to greet us at my car, with cold towels to freshen up from the trip. They walk you to reception and immediately hand you natural drinks. As I mentioned, the drive is not easy and that was a super nice way to start.
After check-in they bring a little golf cart to pick your bags at your car and drive you around the property, like a mini-tour that ends in your room where they explain where things are and how they work.
The rooms are beautiful and spacious, the mattress and linens are very nice, and super comfortable. We had a balcony facing the forest, which they charge more for, but the forest is so thick, that at least from our room, you couldn't see very far, so it wasn't really worth it. The bathrooms are huge and have a large tub, great for couples. The rooms also have like a tiny private garden area with an outdoor shower. I don't think they even advertise it on their site but it was amazing to take a shower outside with the mountain air.
The place is like a kilometer away from Tenorio Park where you would go see the river and then I found out that they don't actually let you swim in the river at the park... very disappointing. However, this hotel has a private little hiking trail, it takes a about 20 minutes, very easy to do and it leads to a point that is perfect for lounging in the river. The rocks form a natural little pool. Also there are a lot of large boulders you can climb and take amazing pictures. The river is a shade of blue you would only see in Disney movies. It's spectacular. Talk to the team before going, they'll tell you the best time to see the river depending on how the weather was the night before so you can really appreciate the color.
All of the staff is incredibly nice and helpful. In the dining room we had a long conversation with Greivin, who was outstanding and gave us tons of great information about the river and the area. The food is delicious. You can tell they put a lot of care into their ingredients and dishes. They also have a great pool, that they keep very clean and adjacent to the pool, they have several hot pools. Super relaxing.
I have no complaints about the establishment. Easily the best place I've been to in Costa Rica and the fact that they allow you to swim in the river is like the cherry on top. I would have been disappointed to just have pics of the river and not experience being IN the river.
Okay, so I've stressed how amazing it is, but it wouldn't be an honest review without at least one criticism. No matter how minor, there is always at least one right? Well, these are very, very minor, but the cocktails weren't so great. We had piña coladas and.... not so good. I haven't found a hotel bar that is very good at cocktails, again a minor thing. Also, the place is pricey. It's amazing and worth it but it's pricey. They were having a deal where the rates were 40% off due to low season, I highly recommend it if you can do it. Low season meant less people and that also meant when we went to the river, we had it all to ourselves, amazing. The food is expensive and without driving elsewhere, you don't really have other options. Again, it's delicious food, but a bit expensive.
So there you have it. Easily 5 stars, but a couple of criticisms for good measure. I definitely suggest that you get out there if you can. Especially if you took the time to read my long review. ;-)

Room tip: Bring a 4WD car if you are going in rainy season. Also, the forest balconies aren't worth it. The forest is too thick to see very far.

Dear Pepe R,

Thank you so much for your very detailed review, it pleases us that you took the time, and it is very helpful to us and for future travelers. If coming from La Fortuna area, bumpy road is the last 7 kilometers, if coming from Guanacaste province, Liberia airport, there are only a couple of kilometers left of bumpy roads, and being worked now.
Our strategic location does allow internal trail leading to the Rio Celeste river, it’s an easy walk and a characteristic that many like you rave about. We will have a look at our cocktail menu and see what improvements can be made. We have a new menu for 2017, have kept some of our guests’ favorite dishes and added new ones, we would be delighted to hear your thoughts, so please visit us again very soon.
