Yes the floors creak and so do the doors, but what do you expect from a historic site... The room we were in was #14 on the 3rd floor. I ALWAYS stay on the top floor or I don't stay, due to the noise that the floors make. No elevator, so if you don't like stairs find another hotel. The room was spotless as was the bath room and had a great view of the town and valley below. It was quite and peaceful. Breakfast was ok. I had the wine and cheese package added to the room and we couldn't eat all the cheese which also had Ghirardelli chocolates included and a great bottle of Chardonnay, all for $115!

Room tip: If you like historic hotels this is a great place to stay! I would recommend staying on the 3rd floor if you can walk the stairs.

We stayed at Hotel St. Nicholas on a Tuesday night the end of August 2016. Check in was simple enough since we parked behind the place and went in the back door and went down a floor to check in. Our room was on their second floor and since they do not have an elevator, we had to take our luggage up three flights of stairs. The room was nice but kind of small and felt tight. The queen size bed was comfortable. The bathroom had a shower stall and toilet, the sink was in the room. My biggest complaint was that the room did not have an individual cool/heat control and the heat was not on in the building and our room got cold by the next morning. When we checked out, the desk clerk said why didn't you come down and get a heater, we had some at the desk. My question to her was why when they knew it was getting cold out, why didn't they put a heater in our room! She blamed it on the clerk that had been in the evening before. I think there staff needs some customer service training.

Room tip: Request corner room on second floor at front of building if you want a view of town

Beautiful old historic hotel. All wood floors which creaked all night long whenever anyone in any room or in the hallway moved. Beds in #17 and #18 were very soft and need to be replaced. Check in was just so-so; young (teenage?) girl was not very forthcoming about activities, meals, etc. Had to ask for hair dryers, extra pillows and extension cord. They were promptly provided, but it would have been nice to have been offered them at check in. Attentive owner was present in the morning at the continental breakfast. Probably would stay somewhere else if we returned.

You can tell there is history in the walls of this hotel. But the rooms were cozy and comfortable. It was in walking distance to the main street area but there is a huge hill to walk down and then back up so beware or you can take the casino shuttles or city shuttles as well.

We stayed 2 nights and loved the atmosphere. The staff was great and we had a wonderful stay. The Boiler Room Bar proved to be a place to find a wealth of information from the local people who were there- from the best places to eat and the attractions to see. It is up the hill from the main drag, but they do have shuttle service. We did not use the shuttle, so I don't know exactly how it works. Only issue we had was with tv reception, and the owner worked hard to get that remedied. Wifi worked well. Stairs may be an issue if they are difficult for you. Town is almost 10,000 ft elevation which may be an issue for some. We were told to drink a lot of water, we did and had no problem.
