We stayed at the Chipmunk Cabin @ Obar-O from August 5-13th. It is really hard to explain how wonderful Obar-O really is…Prior to our arrival, Maria (from Obar-O) sent several emails to us reminding us about their amenities and what we didn’t need to pack in our suitcases. We asked her about several tourist things and what we needed to make reservations for and what we didn’t. Her advice was extremely accurate and added a personal touch you do not receive when checking into hotels, motels etc. Due to the several emails, we felt like we were going to visit old friends which relieved any anxieties about whether the accommodations were going to be adequate or not. The day we arrived in Durango we took her advice and stopped at the market prior to heading to the cabins, due to our early arrival, Maria called us to tell us our cabin was ready for early check-in. Due to our travel starting @ 1:30am, this was a much needed break knowing we were lucky enough to be able to check before 3pm.

When we first arrived at the cabins, our first impressions did not disappoint. We Checked in and met Maria, from the weeks of earlier emails, it felt like a homecoming. When we entered our cabin we were amazed at how beautifully it was decorated and how it looked better in person than the website, (and the pictures on the website are amazing). As we exited the rear door to the deck, it took our breath away, the sound of the river, the trees, views and mountain air, it truly was everything we had hoped for and more. It was closer to the river than we had imagined, more serene and even more breathtaking than we could have envisioned. A beautiful deck, a nicer grill than we have at home and many Adirondack chairs along the river so the place you sat for your morning coffee could be different than the chairs you used for your evening nightcap. Oh, and did I mention the hammock or the hot tub that’s about 20feet from the river, absolutely amazing.

Our 1st night sitting by the river, was when we met Mike, Maria’s husband, he will be the tall guy with the smile on his face peacefully fly fishing in the river. Everyday that we stayed we noticed extra special little touches specific to OBar-o that we hadn’t noticed the day before. The cabins have everything you will need. Their attention to detail in “Rustic Elegance” is unmatched. The towels are the softest I’ve ever felt, the bedding is high quality and very comfy, the sofa looks aged yet it’s new, and to top it off, we wanted coasters for the outdoor Adirondack chairs because they were so nicely finished. The place is Amazing!!

On a personal note, my wife had secretly arraigned for us to renew our wedding vows (after 20 years of marriage) along the river. Unknown to me , she was working with Maria to find an officiate, order a wedding cake, order champagne, receive delivery of plates, napkins, etc. and to devise a plan for it to remain a surprise to me while inviting all of the neighboring vacationers (who now have a special place in our memories). On the day of, Maria went to town to pick up the champagne and cake. She decorated the “wedding area” and during the ceremony Mike and Maria took pictures for us to remember this wonderful celebration.

Simply put, I am confident that you will never be able to find any other resort owners with the willingness to please like Mike & Maria. They are truly special people with a special knack for the business they are in. Their property is amazing and their accommodations are well above 5 star and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with Obar-O.

Arrived at O-Bar-O and were treated by the hosts as if we were long lost friends. We stayed at the Riverside Cabin and were THRILLED to have the river a few feet from our back porch. The cabin was incredibly well decorated and furnished and they actually stock the river with trout for the fly fishermen who bring their fly fishing gear. My wife and I have stayed at dozens of first class inns and hotels in the past, but this is the first truly five star cabin we've ever found with a location that is also five star. If you are traveling to the Durango area - don't waste your money and vacation on a pedestrian hotel when this gem is just up the road.

If you want serenity, beauty and romance coupled with luxury at an affordable price - then DON'T MISS this incredible getaway location...

Excellent is an understatement in describing our rating of O-Bar-O cabins near Durango, Colorado. It was a five star experience, at the very least.

Along with a group of long term friends, my wife, adult son and I spent a week at O-Bar-O cabins just outside of Durango. Colorado. We found this to be a little slice of heaven seated on the banks of the Florida River Rapids where fly fishers patiently stood casting their tackle outside our back door. It was absolutely beautiful and reminded us in many ways of our visit to the Swiss Alps. Quiet, serene and peaceful and nestled among tall pines trees which scanned the horizon – no sounds other than the melodic murmur and roll of the river rapids where we sat had had our coffee each morning and spend many hours meditating, reading and just simply being.

Downstream one of our friends stood fly fishing while others went about their respective leisure-time choices. Our cabin was Ponderosa, a two bedroom cottage with a large deck at the rear and a small front porch. It was located on the very end in a relatively private section of the cabin groups – our preference. The cabin was completely equipped with everything we needed including the cooking utensils, towels, soap, wash clothes, dishes and wine glasses.

Equally as importantly, in our week long experience, our hosts Mike and Maria were absolutely wonderful! From the moment they met us they made us feel as if we were longtime friends who had known each other all our lives. They answered each and every one of our needs and even anticipated our wishes. No better host could we have found.

We left there with a sense of melancholy to be leaving such a serenely peaceful and tranquil environment where the air was fresh and the sounds of nature echoed through this alpine countryside.

We will definitely go back.

Room Tip: There were three of us - my wife and I and an adult son. Ponderosa was ideal for the three of us...

There were 17 of us in 6 cabins for our every two year reunion. We've been doing this since 2000 and have stayed at many great places. O-BAR-O is the best so far! Maria and Mike are super hosts and made our stay as good as it gets. Maria is adorable and willing to help out in any way she can. Mike seems to know everything about fishing and the Colorado mountains. Our cabin (Columbine) was perfect. It had everything we needed, and the bed was so comfortable. It has a great deck, a terrific view of the roaring river, and is peaceful at night for sleeping. We look forward to returning for another reunion.

There was nothing about our stay at O-Bar-O that wasn't just wonderful. We loved the cabin. The river, the peace and tranquility, what more could you ask for? Mike and Maria are great hosts. We wanted a place to relax and this was the best place for that. Durango is such a great town. We want to return in the fall. We can't imagine how beautiful that would be. We celebrated our 30th Anniversary here and maybe we will come for the 31, 32, 34..........
