Owner description: For more than a hundred years, this railway, the highest "cog" railroad in the world and the highest train in the U.S., has been transporting passengers to the summit of Pikes Peak.

The Cog Railway is an interesting trip up the mountain to an elevation of 14,115 feet. The scenic views are views most never will see in their lifetime and by this I mean you will see parts of the mountain that you must have a permit to actually hike and they are limited to a few a year. There are great photo opportunities on the ride up and down if you sit on the other side of the train each way. Once you get to the top spend your time taking pictures of the incredible views, you only get 30 minutes and time flies. The tour guide on the trains was very knowledgeable and funny. We even picked up so hikers on the way down the mountain.

This view was one of the most beautiful I have seen. Although, if you're afraid of heights, I definitely would not recommend. There are few guard rails on the road. There is a pretty lake with a view of the mountains in the back on your way up along with many stops to pull over and take pictures. I also recommend getting a donut from the store at the top and keeping it. watch what happens as you lower in elevation. The bakers use the altitude to their advantage. I would definitely recommend this to anyone in the area, even if you decide not to go the whole way to the top, it is still worth it for the many views along the way.

We enjoyed our rail trip to the top and back down. Only downside is not much time at the top. Be sure and spend your time looking around outside before going in. The views are so much better than the shop or donuts however send one person in to grab the donuts for the slow trek down. The book they sell is inexpensive and a nice remembrance of the trip. Interesting little book. If you have small children you might want to take entertainment. The ride is slow although scenic.

Great way to avoid the harrowing drive up the narrow hairpin curved roadway to the top of Pike's Peak! The conductors share lots of fantastic information about the area, history of the mountain and point out landmarks. It is a slow ride (about an hour each way) so not a quick trip. The views are hard to beat, but it is a bit pricey.
