We attended a picture perfect wedding here. Rain had threatened all day, but the ceremony and cocktail hour proceeded under cloudy skies. It began raining during the reception, however the totally enclosed reception tent kept everyone dry. Be prepared for a half hour drive to Camp Hale from Vail. There were terrific views, but I am glad we were in a bus and not driving on our own.

While there isn't much left to see of this historically significant camp, the area is beautiful and there are maintained dirt roads through the camp that you can travel to give you an idea what this military camp must have been like. There are interpretive signs on the highway as well as some additional signs in the camp itself. There is a campground on site, but not much else. The men who were stationed and trained here at 9200 feet above sea level must have had challenging conditions in the winter. In the summer, the camp is surrounded by beautiful scenery. If you are visiting because you know someone who served in the 10th Mountain Division or are a student of military history, do some research on the Internet before you arrive. It will make your visit even more meaningful.

this is a fantastic place to mountain bike, camp, snow mobile, hike and back country ski. Go and feel the history and the back country but be careful
