I dont even know where to start... we are family with a baby.
this place hardly can be called a retreat... it was full of unpleasant surprises, when we approached the farm my intuition told me not to go in, but to try and find another place. But it was a Xmas weekend and all other places around were booked. So we had no other choice but stay there 1 night:
1- There in no toilet nor shower in the room , you have to walk through the yard to the main house for it. now imagine doing it in the open wind of NZ 'summer' +10'
2- Although they advertise themselves as B&B the breakfast is not provided - they asked us to make our own, and although we had some eggs etc, there is no oven in the room to cook it;
3- There is no blackout curtains in the room full of windows and we had bad sleep since 5-6 am because the room was very bright
4 - There is no internet, I assume it is where the word "retreat" comes from. :))
5 - The rooms are very cold, hence the house is at the very windy spot. and it has one small heater which they asked to turn off at night.
6- We were traveling with an infant , and asked to show us their animals and so the man with a very sour face took us in the backyard where the pigs, sheep and goats are... and with not much of enthusiasm he walked us around for 10 min.. as you imagine;
7- the location is hard to find and it is not in the same town as advertised.
8 - and finally after all that they told us that they dont have a credit card machine so the booking.com can not transfer them money, and we have to pay cash, which we didnt have , (the online booking was $130 NZ) , The lady advised my husband to go online some other website and pay there.. which she charged $160NZ !!!!! Overall owners didnt have a welcoming and friendly attitude.
I ASSURE YOU THE TOP PRICE THIS PLACE WORTH WOULD BE $60 !!!
next few days we stayed in the very lovely luxury house for $170- where we were treated like kings, served great breakfast up until 12pm. room with a beautiful ocean view!

so be aware even if you already have a booking and you can do not go and you will not be charged for it.!
REGARDS ALL!

Room Tip: 1- DO NOT VISIT WITH KIDS! 2 - do not pay more then $60 if you are ok with above description; 3- if you have booked it but changed your mind - find yourself another place , since they can not charge you for "no-show" anyway.

The couple had booked into Bennys Barn for $120 per night (for up to 2 people) which had a mezzanine floor with a double mattress upstairs and 2 bunk beds downstairs. I had emailed the husband who had made the booking as to what time they would arrive. He emailed late afternoon and they did not show up till the evening. He also emailed that they had a 8 month old baby. The barn did not come with breakfast.

On arrival, I told them that the Cottage with a queen bed would be more suitable with a baby and although it was dearer ($130 per night) they could still have it for $120 per night. I was going to offer a baby mattress but the husband said his wife always sleeps with the baby and he sleeps in a different bed - so I made up the double pull-out sofa bed for him. Usually, we charge an extra $30 per person because we still have to wash extra sheets and towels but I just told him $120 for the night

I always introduce myself to the guests and was waiting for an introduction to the lady who just stared at me. We walked into the cottage and straight away she said it was cold. I pointed out the heater to her and offered a hot water bottle. I told her it was best to turn the heater off when they went to sleep because it would be dangerous to leave it on all night. The temperature was 20 degrees Celsius and everyone was in summer clothes. Then she said there was no bathroom. I said that the bathroom was next door and it was written on the websites. I could tell she would be trouble so I offered her to go down to the motel down the road. Her husband brought the bags in and I asked him if he knew that the bathroom was next door and that it was on the website. He said that was OK.

1. On all the websites - we mention that the bathroom was in the building next door which is just 10 steps away.

2. Our rooms do not have cooking facilities which is stated on the websites and the husband said not to worry about breakfast because they had their own. Usually we supply continental breakfast for the cottage but not the barn (which is what they booked). The husband came to our house and asked if he could use our kitchen to cook him and his wife breakfast which we let him do

3. There are curtains on all the windows

4. We advertise on the websites that we have no internet

5. We ask guests to turn the heater off when they go to sleep because it would be dangerous to leave it on all night

6. Since they arrived in the evening (dark), the husband kept asking about the animals. We said we can take them around in the morning. Check out is at 11am and they were still in their room at 12.30pm. We knocked on the door and asked them when they were going to leave because we had another guest checking in that night and had to clean the room. Check in is at 2pm. The husband said they would leave soon and they packed up their car. I knew they wanted to see the animals so I said to them that we could show them the animals. My husband showed them all the farm animals and would have spent as long as they wanted with them.

7. There is a sign post on the main road for our property. It is also easy to find on google maps. We are only 800 metres from State Highway 1.

8. When booking, the booking.com invoice states that the guests should pay cash on arrival. They did not have cash and so I offered for the husband to pay on our website www.warkworthaccommodation.com. We do not have credit card facilities because we are only small.
I told him that we will now get charged 2 lots of commission but that didn't matter. The husband said he would pay extra for that. I said not to worry but maybe he could pay $130 instead of $120 just to cover some of it. He did not have his credit card on him so he paid later on in the room - probably via his phone. Later on he mentioned that he had paid via our website but they had taken $160 payment from him. He said he had put in 2 adults plus a child. I said that was why. I said usually we charge $30 extra per person and I thought he was being nice by paying us that extra $30 because I did make up an extra double bed for them. I apologised and said I did not have cash on me to give him back $30. He said not to worry about it

They left the cottage in a mess. Rubbish everywhere on the floor, dirty nappies in the bin inside the cottage. There were bins in the toilet and bathroom. Linen everywhere and dirty dishes on the bench and teaspoons dotted on the floor around the bed and under the table.

I feel that they totally abused their privileges.

We really enjoyed our stay in the Wayby Cottage last night.
Everything was there, could hardly ask for anything more.
The late checkout was a bonus!
All in all a lovely stay in the country with friendly hosts.

Room Tip: We definitely prefer the Wayby Cottage over the other

Lovely little cottage, just a hop, skip and a jump off SH1 - really easy to find. Relaxing environment, clean and comfortable, friendly hosts - everything you need. A real home away from home, can't recommend enough! :)

Sweet little country retreat 1hr from Auckland nestled in the hills near Welsford. Very accommodating owner who made us very welcome.
Your surrounded by lovely scenery in a very peaceful environment, the whole thing was very relaxing. And the dogs were wonderfull thank you for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: Less agile guests would prefer wayby cottage over benny's barn
