“Great Beach!”
Review of Pickering Beach

Pickering Beach
Ranked #18 of 35 things to do in Dover
Attraction details
Reviewed 8 June 2017 via mobile

Visited this beach on a recent trip to Dover for the NASCAR race. Beach is only 7 miles from the race track. There are several parking spots at the beach access point. There is also a Porta potty there too. We went when tide was coming in. Saw lots of horseshoe crabs. My son and his friend (both 9) had a blast flipping overturned crabs upright. There were literally thousands of crabs. We strolled up and down the beach collecting rocks and shells. There was also a decomposing humpback whale about a mile up the beach. Boys loved that. We spent about 4 house at the beach. Boys built a sandcastle and played on beach. This beach is more for nature observing and walking. We took chairs and watched the crabs coming in while boys played. Took a cooler with snacks and drinks too. We saw about 15 people while there. If you near Dover in May/June and have kids it's worth the visit to see the crabs. I will visit again when in the Dover area.

Being this far north and in a bay it was what I expected.

Relaxing place to just walk along in the sand. It was quiet and nobody bothered us

There are parking spots on the north side of the road as you pull up.

Port-o-potty is by the parking spots.

If you understand what you are getting into, this beach is interesting. Yes, it is very small and non-resident parking is limited (park to the left as you go in, not on the road that runs parallel to the beach), but I've never seen it full or overly crowded. I recommend it for folks that enjoy nature (birds, horseshoe crabs, etc) and peace and quiet. Once you get on the beach you can walk for miles beyond the community itself into more remote areas only inhabited by wildlife. So it's really a good place for a walk or photography moreso than sitting on the beach under an umbrella and/or swimming, etc.

Don't waste your time going to this beach as it is private for residents! All the signs at beach indicate that it is illegal to Park and your car will be towed away!
