Wanted to run away from south Florida before Hurricane Mathew. All the news reports predicted that we were to get slammed.....beyond slammed. Decided to make the trek across the State to the small town of Cedar Key. We had stayed at Cedar Cove in the past. Thank Goodness upon arrival after fighting hours and hours of traffic delays of other trying to evacuate....they had space for us. Normally this property does not accommodate pets. Gina, the owner/manager was welcoming people with pets, with lack of funds and the pets were welcome as well as people that were without money to pay or very limited funds. You see, several weeks before she and her husband, Peter totally lost their restaurant and bar that was located on the property. The loss was so tremendous.... you would think that the restaurant was never even there. Today, it is a totally clean slate and empty space. All of their possessions from the restaurant are sunken to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. Personally, this was their livelihood as I dont believe so much revenue is generated from the hotel as it is a timeshare property. So, it means so much when people that have endured such a tremendous loss give to others. This is not a fancy property by any means, Its cute, quaint and comfortable with fabulous views of the Gulf and the pristine, small Florida beach town. I hope those that were so graciously accepted in will remember this property and town when they are not themselves in a DESPERATE situation. But, we do not always remember and pay back. I know that we will moving forward. Soon, they will have a brand new 5 Start restaurant again and I hope people will make the trip and say that they are Hurricane Mathew Alumni an survivors. I am sure that Gina and Peter will remember and welcome you back with open arms.

Room tip: The rooms on the Gulf are FABULOUS

Was so lucky to find a room for a last minute evacuation. Very comfortable room with a private balcony with view of water. All hotels in this town have damage from Hurricane Hermine! With all of their problems they still tried to make all of us comfortable. The manager Gina was great! We visit Cedar Key at least twice a year and we will always stay here!

Room tip: Rooms are very spacious. Third floor rooms have loft bedrooms!

Unfortunately there were no rooms available when we stopped on our search for a pet friendly place on our second night on the road. However, the "sweet lady" at the desk offered to check with other hotels nearby. The Quality Inn had a cancellation! She reserved the room for us and we were on our way. Another place that we hope to revisit soon. Such good people.

Our room had a stunning view straight out over the Gulf of Mexico. Great spot for morning coffee and dolphin watching, as they were feeding right in front every morning. ! Although this place could use a bit of updating it really has everything you need for a great stay. We stayed in a one bedroom unit, complete with a kitchen, living area and lanai. I might stay in a studio next time as the bedroom is in a loft upstairs accessed by a spiral staircase and the only bath is on the first floor...midnight runs to the powder room are a bit inconvenient. We didn't try the restaurant but it looked like a decent spot. Wifi worked great in the office but the room, not so much.

Room tip: Some rooms are furnished a bit better. Our friends were in 306 and we in 308...theirs was nicer but just by a bit.

The gym was closed, the hot tub located in the gym was closed, supposedly with a leak but from peering in the window it appears to have been closed down for many years. There is no yacht club and there is no marina either. This is an older property and the room we had (205) was very dated but also very comfortable. There is a slightly musty smell but I always travel with Febreze and to be honest I expected a musty odor since it's oceanfront. We needed extra pillows, a cutting board and a cookie sheet that were promptly delivered to our room. We haven't had a chance to use the pool because it's been raining but the oceanfront side of our unit is full glass and there has been a pod of dolphin outside 20-250 yards from our window feeding and frolicking for hours that more than makes up fro any shortcomings of the property. Not many places where you can hang out in bed with a cup of coffee and watch pelicans, seagulls and dolphin right outside your window! Be sure to bring binoculars, there is wildlife everywhere and you'll definitely use them. Steamers restaurant has fantastic fried clams and a clam bowl of a dozen steamed clams in a wonderful white wine pot liquor that we took home with us to eat with bread, couldn't let them throw it away.

If you are coming to Cedar Key for a quiet getaway or a fishing trip this is a wonderful place to stay, as long as you aren't expecting fancy accommodations and daily maid service. Everything is very clean, the staff are helpful and the view cannot be beat.

Room tip: 205 is oceanfront and not far from the elevator
