We visited Marlin & Barrel last Saturday as they were celebrating their business and a new whiskey. The staff was so friendly and we enjoyed hearing about their growth. We had not been to a distillery before and it was so interesting. Their building (share with Marine Museum) was just off Center Street near all the shops. We will definitely go again.

A group of 3 of us went to the only distillery in the island hoping to get a tour and it history. All we got was a taste testing. Which to be fair they made great alcohol. No tour or history of the place just a bar to buy and sample there liquors and an area to buy merchandise. They had a window which you can see where they distilled the liquor but that's it. Small place sms very impersonal.

I think TripAdvisor is a great tool for people to scan how other's experiences were when they consider what to do with their own time and money. 3 years ago, not long after we opened and when it was just a one man show here we got our first 1 star review. Basically, people came to see us and we were closed when we had posted hours saying we would be open. The person who posted was right to do so and I responded with apologies and committed to not put the business in that place again. Fortunately that person came back and gave us a positive re-review. That post made us and future visitor's experiences better. That's how it should work and because I value this process I take seriously and respond to the few negative reviews we get.

Your review isn't that. It seems either particularly mean spirited or completely unrealistic to have given us a "Terrible" report. We are a manufacturing center. We may be small, but we're in the business of taking raw ingredients and making great spirits. You review the outcome of our primary effort by commenting that "...to be fair they made great alcohol", and yet offer the Terrible assessment. Your key observations include a disappointment that there wasn't a tour and history presentation when you came.

I would understand, except, you're a level 3 contributor to TripAdvisor. You've written many reviews in multiple cities. Surely you rely on TA for information then too. With any cursory 5 minute review of us on TA you would have a keen sense of what to expect. Yet, you still come, knowing roughly what is offered, and then make the harshest assessment possible.

I also firmly reject the impersonal assessment. While we only can fund tours on Saturday, we tell our story and how each product is made every day when the Tasting Room is open. We sign each bottle sold in house and add a personalized saying. We do this for the grand total price of FREE.

Looking at your other reviews, I have to wonder if the Fudge Shop gave you the history of chocolate making or perhaps let you participate in making your own personalized batch that led you to a 4 star review of them. Why the inconsistency?

I'd invite you back for a more complete experience on Saturday afternoons when we offer our FREE tour, but if The Wizarding World of Harry Potter can't earn more than an Average review from you, and we can't offer a PhD seminar in the history and manufacturing methods of alcohol production in a half hour tour, then we're probably at an impasse in our ability to satisfy you.

Fwiw, it's "Except" (not "Accept"), we're "on" the island (not "in") and it's "their" (not "there" liquors). If you're going to dump on a small family business you would come off as more creditable if you had better use of the English language. I'm sorry, we welcome constructive criticism, but I give this review a 1 star.

The distillery hosted an unveiling of a new whiskey so my friends and I decided why not go and check it out! Am so glad we did! Roger and Heather and their staff are so welcoming and laid back but very knowledgable anout their rum, vodka, gin and whiskey produced on site. Heather even told us the grapefruit in their grapefruitcello came off the tree in their own yard! Tastings are free but be prepared to purchase several bottles before Leaving!

Marlin & Barrel Distillery is a unique very small batch distillery and worth a visit. I lived in Kentucky for 35 years and am very much a bourbon lover. Having been around and toured the big distilleries I was pleasantly surprised with the level of knowledge held by Noelle. Many don't know the difference in whisky and then Bourbon but Noelle knows her liquor. This is an experience. During the tastings (and you get to taste all that they make) Noelle fascinated us with the details of each liquor, how it's made and the ingredients used to make each what they are. Marlin & Barrel is a great way to spend some time. My favorite was the roasted pepper vodka -- makes for a great bloody mary.

Do not miss going here and although pricey, worth the money. The tasting is free and you can pick what you like. The rum was as good as any. The gin is unique and different from London or Amsterdam stuff. This is light on the juniper and adds a lemon grass flavor. We have all had lemoncello, but the greatfruitcello is worth a bottle. This week they are launching their bourbon so look forward to that.
