Owner description: This half-mile-long, crescent-shaped patch reef is an interesting dive site since it is highly developed and similar to those of most outer bank reefs in the Key Largo area.

We took a snorkeling trip through John Pennecamp Park for $29/per person (if you need to rent snorkeling gear it's a little extra). The boat ride is about 15 minutes out to the reef and is a pretty gentle ride through mangroves and some open water. The trip was 1.5 hours total, with an hour in the water. The reef is very shallow and has some great thriving coral areas and sea grass, but unfortunately is showing some damage/bleaching as well (but this doesn't seem to be drastic)... there's still tons of fish and sealife to see. On our trip we saw barracuda, parrotfish and tons of other tropical fish, conchs, rays, sea turtle, and a few jelly fish careful and watch for the jellies to be floating at the top of the water (we only saw about 6 and did not get stung!).

This is my favorite place to snorkel in the Keys. You can only access by boat, but it is so worth any extra effort. If you do not have a boat, your options include renting a boat or going on a snorkeling tour boat (many places offer this--call for times & prices). When snorkeling at this reef, there are numerous tropical fish right in front of your snorkeling mask! This snorkeling area is shallow & protected from waves due to the reef itself (crescent shaped shielding it from the Atlantic). This makes it perfect for children or first time snorkelers. Experienced snorkelers will also enjoy it. I go every time that I am in Key Largo. The variety of aquatic life (fish & plants) is unsurpassed. This is a must see & should be added to everyone's bucket list.

We participated in a snorkel tour with pennekamp during our recent visit to Florida. Our trip took us to Grecian rock. The marine life was interesting! The coral was not as colorful as another area I snorkelled in at pennekamp when I was a teen. But a great locale for marine life!

Visited here twice with Pennekamp park. Loved every minute of it. Would be great if you had a boat of your own and knew how to get there. Wonderful snorkel with eagle rays and other fish.
