Owner description: Long famous for its Key Marco Cat- one of the most remarkable and influential discoveries in North American archaeology- the new Marco Island Historical Museum explores Southwest Florida's Calusa Indians and bring this vanished civilization to life with informative displays and an exciting recreated village scene. Temporary and traveling exhibits trace the settlement of this subtropical island paradise from its early pioneer roots as a fishing village, pineapple plantation and clam cannery, through its explosive growth and development in the 1960s by the Miami-based Deltona Corporation.

The history of Marco Island is very well documented in this museum. The displays of the Archaic Indians, Calusa Indians, the pioneers, the Colliers, the Mackle brothers explained the history, geography, the housing of Marco Island and are so well done. The volunteers and staff are very friendly and informative. The gardens were awarded the 2017 garden award, and there is a pamphlet that explains the garden's contents. I hope to return in the future when the museum gets its Marco Cat back from the Smithsonian.

We rented a house nearby and just stopped while taking a walk in to see what the museum was like. So interesting to know the history of the island, especially how it was developed in the 1960's from basically swampland to a thriving community. There is an excellent video that covers the history and many exhibits including information on the early settlers and the Native Americans who first inhabited the island. We are so glad we stopped in.
