“Blue Dog is Fun”

Blue Dog Bar & Grill
Ranked #3 of 19 Restaurants in Matlacha
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$3 - US$15
Cuisines: Seafood
Description: The goal of Blue Dog was to open a small, neighborhood restaurant in Matlacha, Florida the town we love. Our focus is on the small things that belong in a neighborhood restaurant. Being genuinely friendly, knowing the names of our guests and serving fresh local food at reasonable prices. Our hope is that the neighborhood grows to trust us and makes us an extension of their homes. The white boots (locally called 'Pine Island Reeboks') that 'Blue' wears on our logo are a nod to the rich past and current fishing history of Pine Island and Matlacha. These boots are worn by commercial fishermen all along the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida. From our family, we'd like to give our thanks to every crabber, fisherman, shrimper, oysterman, and all the commercial fishermen on the entire Gulf Coast but particularly Matlacha and Pine Island, for the sacrifices you have made to carry on the traditions of your fathers. It's one of the things that makes us proud to call Matlacha and Pine Island home. This is a great community. We have weathered storms...together. We work hard...together. We play hard...together and when the day is done...those white boots are put out to dry. Come, eat well, have a brew and sit with us for a while...and the dog is happy.

Cool place for anyone looking for something other than bar food. This place can be busy so plan ahead. Try the beach bread.

I've been to the Blue Dog several times but the last visit really wasn't up to par. Since high season is over the long waits and stressed out staff is over. But for whatever reason nothing seemed to be flowing right that Sunday night. . Sitting in the 'back room near the front door' which I've done several times was awful...hot and noisy to the point it was useless to try and talk...try yelling to each other! The waitperson couldn't remember who ordered what... the appetizers arrived after the salads, the drinks were wrong or given to the wrong person and my dinner didn't arrive at all since the waitperson goofed and couldn't read her own writing. We had to ask for refills on water, iced tea, etc. The food...overcooked [coconut shrimp and fried shrimp] The french fries...limp. Just not much to say that's positive...our friends don't plan on going back but hopefully we will try again.

The food was really good, but you will have to wait for it. The fish was very fresh. The servers are friendly, but very busy. They offered to bring the soup and salad out first, but that never happened. They need to work on their service.

In Matlacha, this grill has some great choices in good food. From salads, soups, sandwiches, and fish meals, this is worth the stop. Large inside so seating isn't a problem usually. Good selection of tap beers. Very casual and a great place to rest between the many shops near by.

We heard good things about The Blue Dog. We had a short wait. We got to sit outside which is outback overlooking a small area of water. We had a great server. We had grouper and mullet. Highly recommend it. will come back next year for another visit.
