Driving between Butte, MT and Idaho Falls, ID. there is not many choices for eating. As it got later and we got hungrier we chose the only thing we could find...Opal Country Cafe in Spencer, ID. Turns out it was a great choice.. special today was a fry bread taco (salad). Delicious and filled with freshly cooked beef mixture, beans, rice and salad on warm fry bread. Husbands choice was hot roast beef sandwich & mashed potatoes ..also very good and filling..and lemonade. All for under $20. Cafe is small..only 4 or 5 tables..service was excellent.
If interested, you can also "mine" for opals just outside the cafe.

Love this place. Could hardly pull my hubby away and I myself could spend eternity here. So fun and had an amazing find! Everyone there is so awesome, such good people who are the nicest folks you'll meet. They give you a crash course at the beginning and then Randy is there to help steer everyone in the right direction. Food is so tasty too!! Thanks guys for the amazing time and for being so kind and helpful!

Just coming from an off-the-grid stay we stopped here in Spencer just as the town was getting ready for its 4th of July parade. Cute town and nice people. The Opal cafe had a nice area for kids to hunt opals - a nice indoor eating area and a very pleasant patio with a mountain bluebird on the fence which the very friendly owner pointed out. And it's right next to a cell tower after miles of No Service so great place to catch up on data services!

The restaurant is inside the mining shop. I am grading this solely on the convenience of the location. Before or after mining, you can relax and have a bite to eat. Even if you do not want to mine, I love places like this to stop at. Easy in and easy out. For example, we decided to get off at Ogden Utah and just a waste. travel away from the interstate, bathrooms not open to public, very time consuming. Yes, convenience when you travel, very nice.

We stop here every fall when we are camping at Stoddard Creek or hunting in the fall. I gave this place a 5 rating not necessarily because it is the best gourmet food but because it is fresh and homemade. The owners and employees enjoy what they are doing. You just have to sit back and enjoy where you are and appreciate this part of America that very few people even knows exist.
