We had friends down from Tampa and went to a stand-up comedy show at McCurdy's the Sunday night before Memorial Day. While they serve food at the club, we opted for something better within walking distance which was still serving at 9pm. Mediterraneo fit the bill.
Mediterraneo has a good variety of affordably priced Italian dishes. Normally, I would order one of the pasta or meat entrees but instead I opted for a pizza from their wood burning oven. It was big enough that I couldn't finish it and had to take some home for a late night snack. It had a delightful thin crust which I like and was topped with tomato sauce, cheese and sausage chunks.
My friend had Costoletta di vitello alla Parmigiana which is bone in veal chop which he liked a lot and also couldn't finish. The two wives each had a delightful pasta dish. We had no room for dessert and headed home for some later.
This Italian really hit the spot. Don't get me wrong about the portions - they're just right. It's not one of these belt buster type places. We were satisfied and didn't find the need to gorge ourselves.
The interior is elegant but casual feeling enough not to come across as stuffy.
We'd consider it one of the best Italian restaurants in downtown Sarasota.
