Description: With its modern but classic Italian cuisine and emphasis on artisanal and contemporary Northern Italian style, Mediterraneo is often credited with being the first restaurant to bring authentic contemporary Italian cuisine to Sarasota when it first opened in 1996. Still under the same ownership, Mediterraneo has consistently been rated one of the top restaurants in Zagat. The restaurant has received numerous accolades including the acclaimed Insegna Del Ristorante Italiano awarded by The Minister of Agriculture & Commerce in Rome. With its highest honor, inducting the restaurant into its Accademia Italiana della Cucina "Fine Dining Hall of Fame." Mediterraneo has been rated as Best of the Best in Sarasota Magazine since the first year of opening. So whether you're celebrating a special occasion or grabbing a quick bite to eat, at Mediterraneo you are always assured the best quality food accompanied by excellent service. All of it thoroughly Italian.

We visited this place based on a recommendation from the concierge at the Ritz Carlton. The atmosphere is very modern. The restaurant was packed which is always a good sign. She highly recommended the lasagna which is different than most lasagnas there was no sauce it was full of meat we felt that was mediocre. Probably would not order that lasagna again however if you're looking for a different type of lasagna you may want to try this. I had to gnocchi with the cheese sauce which had very little flavor. My son had a pasta dish with lamb that I have to say it was out of this world. The appetizers were very good, we had shrimp in this bean sauce that was very different however extremely tasty. The Carpaccio was very good as well. The highlight was the Tarimasu everybody felt it was a different and they enjoyed every bite.

Great dishes...carpaccio with arugula and parmigiano, ravioli with pesto, shrimp spiedini, lamp chops. Oh, and the pizza... Bruno, who is from the island of Sardinia, takes his art/craft of making thin-crust pizza ever so seriously. His could very well be the best pizza I've had outside of Italy. All in all, it is always delicious a meal with excellent service and a great atmosphere. It's no wonder the staff are always happy and pleasant, the owners can often be seen working right along side them, and will not hesitate to engage you in conversation about your food/meal experience. Or, as they most always remember you, about how your life is going (with sincerity).
Be sure to get a reservation...not surprisingly, the place is most always very busy.

We had friends down from Tampa and went to a stand-up comedy show at McCurdy's the Sunday night before Memorial Day. While they serve food at the club, we opted for something better within walking distance which was still serving at 9pm. Mediterraneo fit the bill.

Mediterraneo has a good variety of affordably priced Italian dishes. Normally, I would order one of the pasta or meat entrees but instead I opted for a pizza from their wood burning oven. It was big enough that I couldn't finish it and had to take some home for a late night snack. It had a delightful thin crust which I like and was topped with tomato sauce, cheese and sausage chunks.

My friend had Costoletta di vitello alla Parmigiana which is bone in veal chop which he liked a lot and also couldn't finish. The two wives each had a delightful pasta dish. We had no room for dessert and headed home for some later.

This Italian really hit the spot. Don't get me wrong about the portions - they're just right. It's not one of these belt buster type places. We were satisfied and didn't find the need to gorge ourselves.

The interior is elegant but casual feeling enough not to come across as stuffy.

We'd consider it one of the best Italian restaurants in downtown Sarasota.

the tables are very close togetherand the waiters rush by you and bump your table and I find it the attitude is not that you are the customer but you're lucky to come to the restaurant and the funny part is it's only average but the prices are above the quality probably will not go back there again as I've been there a few times and the popcorn is better cross the street at the movie theater then the food

We went here because we wanted a wood fired oven pizza and were not disappointed they were good. The taste of all we had was exceptional. The place is stylish and the service top notch. We could not fault it.
