The two and a half hours we recently spent on a pontoon boat cruising the Indian River Lagoon was money well spent ($50 per person). Captain Nancy runs this eco tour and provides a virtually nonstop commentary and wealth of information on the geography, history, environment and wildlife of this fragile ecosystem. She is a passionate advocate for environmental responsibility, and yes, she does have an agenda and some strong opinions (politicians, "experts"), but delivers a strong message as to the importance of protecting our natural surroundings.

We observed nesting wood storks on the critically designated Bird Island along with Brown Pelicans, Roseate Spoonbills and an assortment of egrets and herons while dining on a provided lunch of sandwiches, cookies and beverages. Another highlight was her doing a five-minute troll of the water to collect its resident organisms (plankton, copepods) which we then viewed in magnifying chambers, an amazing volume and variety of microscopic sea life. We didn't have any dolphins or manatees on our trip, but it was still a great experience, and if in the area, don't miss it.

This wildlife tour is so informative and Captain Nancy is so passionate about nature and conservation that it rubs off on you. If you miss this tour while in this area you will really miss out on learning so much about the wildlife in this area and even the planet itself.

We learned a good bit about the areas we were in. Captain Nancy and Patrick were welcoming and helpful. Some on the boat didn't care for all of her opinions about how the local government.

Captain Nancy is a wealth of information on the wildlife, history, and ecology of the Indian River Lagoon. Seeing and learning about Bird Island was one of the highlights of the tour. An outstanding tour both for what you see and what you learn.

Note: located in Pirate's Cove. If you do a search on Google Maps without first putting in the address, you will be directed to the wrong location (not far away, but nevertheless not the right place). I've emailed Google about this, but so far it hasn't changed.

Tour website has correct location, so use the map there for directions.

I took this trip yesterday with a group of elderly seniors who all had walkers and one was in a wheelchair. Captain Nancy was EXTREMELY helpful and caring to each and every one of them. She even assisted me with boarding the walkers and made a special trip to unlock the nearest bathroom for one of the women. She definitely went above and beyond to make us comfortable. The trip itself was outstanding. We saw beautiful wildlife and the mate, Patrick, even spotted 14 manatees for us! Captain Nancy is extremely knowledgable about Florida's wildlife and is very passionate about saving our waters. The entire trip was fabulous and I highly recommend it. We all learned so much and enjoyed a gorgeous boat ride in the process. As the activities director at a nearby assisted living, I can tell you that not many boats would be this hospitable to the elderly.
