This is not a casual or easy trip for the unprepared at least during winter. We followed the self-guided driving tour provided by the Fannin County Chamber of Commerce. We were not fully prepared mentally for the ruggedness of the trip. You will be on narrow unpaved US Forrest Service roads which are curvy, narrow, and mountainous. We started a little to late in the day and only made it as far as Jacks River Fields before reversing and heading back to our cabin rental.
Our goal was to make it to the Lake Conasauga Recreation Area so we only made about halfway. We will try again, on one of our future visits.
