We have been scouting out South Indian food (our favorite!) in GA for decades, and this is by far the best South Indian food we have tasted in Georgia. The owners+staff are courteous, accommodating and attentive, the bathrooms and the facilities are clean, and the food is plain delicious. They will often surprise you with offers of day-specials such as iddayam(?) or a dosa-buffet. Try out their fried idly at least once in your life! Among other things, the menu has dozens and dozens of dosa/uttapam variations, and they are more than happy to create custom dosas as well. One of us goes to town making a custom meal out of various sides, for example! South Indian food is naturally gluten-free and about half of it is free of hot spices and jalapenos, which is a Godsent for us! We drive 50 miles just to go eat here. About time I finally left a review! Over the years, we have had awesome discussions with everyone, from Jega to Prakash to Sashika to Jeetu to Priya to Anoop to Venkatesh to George (and I'm surely forgetting a few names!). Thanks for all the food! - Dave and Natasha

If there were 6 Stars , I would give it. I have had Dosa (Indian Vegetarian) all over the USA and this one is tops. Party of 4, with one couple never experiencing this cuisine. All loved this experience. The food prep and service is unparalleled. Eating a cuisine from any nation, in a restaurant that is full of patrons from that nation is another testimony that we were in for a great meal, and we were right. The manager Soeejith Nair, (got his business card) , made sure we had the best exposure to the food and the establishment. He told us to call him G-2. Run to this place, Monday Night (all you can eat Dosa) , let G-2 pick the types for you. We had dessert as well, Indian type rice pudding. Awesome

We chose this so-called restaurant based on the good reviews on TripAdvisor (TA). However, it was not the case. Here is my candid review of this place and the chain...
Went here for lunch and returned home disappointed. First, they didn't have a lunch buffet. That may be their policy, but it could have been different during the Diwali weekend....
Second, the food was not that great.
I generally don't like the Udipi brand (from my own experiences in the past) but the good TA reviews for this particular location and our eagerness to try new restaurants dragged us here…
Ordered the Andhra Spicy dosa and Pongal-Vada...My wife ordered the Bisi bele bath…
After a long wait, they brought the stuff...I was only conserving my enthusiasm for a sumptuous lunch... But did not realize that a disaster was about to unfold...
Guess what- the so-called spicy dosa was a joke...It was just a bland masala dosa disguised under a new name...They seemed to have applied some masala paste on the dosa but we couldn't feel the flavors, taste or the spice level although could barely see it on the dosa…
It was mediocre...with a boring usual taste of the well-known bland potato masala..
I could have ordered a masala dosa instead…

To make it worse, they did not have enough chutney varieties and only served a bland coconut chutney, if I am right...they could offer more for the $ they charge...
Also, they didn't exercise common sense in serving the dishes...They brought the dosa (supposed to be the main course) first and then the pongal vada (supposed to be the starter)...
The pongal tasted so bad (liked mixed rice of some sort) that I was not able to consume it fully. The rice was not cooked well (did not have a mashy consistency typical for Pongal recipe)..instead, it looked like a half-cooked and discolored pale bisi bele bath...
sounds weird right?....Yes, it tasted weird...
In addition to the bland-sweet Udipi sambar they typically serve, they offered buttermilk or yogurt and pickle as sides for the Pongal...Never heard of that combination...the plate looked weird...And, that must be an unholy alliance IMHO…

We had a conversation with the waiter about this and her careless and insensitive response put us off...She was sarcastically smiling at the remorse we shared...Never seen that kind of an awkward reaction before...the insensitivity she showed when receiving a feedback looked foolish and disrespectful...
Does that audacity imply that no one can judge their food? Come on Udipi, that's crazy...
That demeanor was disrespectful and totally unacceptable…
My wife was quietly consuming her bisi bele bath and seemed upset with what was unfolding...later, I heard that the business bele bath was also below average....
Hope the management can learn to be respectful to their customers. The real disappointment is that this attitude is common in most of the Udipi chains...
Overall, my lunch at Udupi Cafe, last Sunday was a disaster....
Will not go here again.....Never try the Pongal and the so-called Andhra spicy dosa here...

Dear Guest,

First, let me offer my sincere apologies for your disappointing experience at Udipi Cafe. As recent owners of this restaurant, My husband and I along with the entire Udipi team strive to provide each and everyone of our guests great food, excellent customer service and a beautiful atmosphere to enjoy a meal with family and friends. It seemed we failed to meet these standards based on your recount of events. Unfortunately I was not present at the time but apologize for any disrespect felt when addressing your complaints. We require our staff be respectful and professional with our guests at all times. Also, contrary to your observation, we welcome constructive feedback so we can improve our food and overall guest experience. All I can offer you sir is our assurance that your feedback has been heard and will be addressed. We hope you give our restaurant another chance to give you the wonderful experience we strive for and you deserve.

I would also like to take this opportunity to clarify a few aspects of your feedback if I may. The Udipi Cafe located in Duluth is not part of any chain or franchise and never has been. There are different restaurants having the same name in different states but each are independent of the other. Second, the Duluth location has never offered a buffet for lunch or dinner from its first opening eight years ago. Instead we offer four different "Thali" options that includes rice and six curries with condiments as a reasonable alternative to the buffet. Over the Diwali weekend we offered a new North Indian Thali offering and Unlimited Chaat for dinner to celebrate the special occasion.

As new management we take our guest experiences very seriously and will do our best to offer exceptional service and food at all times. This is our pledge to you.

Thank you,

Udipi Management
