I hate to write this review because I love Deer Island. Previous trips there I stayed in another place, now closed down. So, I booked the 45th Parallel Motel and Restaurant - not the same experience. While air conditioning and complimentary breakfast are still advertised, we could find neither. Free WiFi is also advertized - nope, little to no coverage. The showers are like more like a London fog; if it wasn't for gravity there be no pressure at all, but the endless wait for hot water does build character. The food is average pub fare - nothing to write home about. On the up side, the service was very friendly and the room, while old and outdated, was mostly clean - except for the big stain on my bed sheets and the broken window screens. Yikes! I really want Deer Island to thrive - but things seem to be declining - I won't be rushing back anytime soon. Too bad, it's a unique and friendly place, it used to be well worth a visit.

Booked this place a month in advance after checking out the reviews and thought it would be worth a try - wrong. We drove around the island after the ferry ride to see what was there and we witnessed the Tidal Bore which was very interesting as was seeing the original salmon farm and the new salmon farms. Spoke with a couple of the workers from the new salmon farm and it was very interesting as well. We decided to go back to check into the Motel and have a bite for lunch. The woman looked a little sheepish and said we couldn't stay there because she had just had the place fumigated and didn't think it was wise to have us stay and that she would have let us know but she lost our telephone number. We still needed to eat so we asked if the restaurant part was open she said yes but she only had fish and chips, lasagne and chicken fingers. Beggars can't be choosers so we had fish and chips and lived through the experience and drove as quickly as we could to get to the ferry to get off this island and never to return.
