Amazing collection of gems and lapidary art. Carved animals in their natural settings are a real attraction for children. Quite an impressive collection from all over the world.

I am not a big fan of museums, so I hesitated about going to this one. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. It is not a huge museum, so unless you want to read everything in detail, it is an east 90 minute to 2 hour visit. The entrance fee is very reasonable plus they have student and senior discounts.

They have extremely informative videos in the lower level and a very kid-friendly exhibit down there, showing Illinois and Wisconsin rock formations, and fossils, as well as dioramas using gem stone carvings.

Great place for real geology buffs or just families with mixed interests, plus a very reasonably priced gift shop.

Great easy trip to see something real unique in a nice location. Easy to get to and an easy trip. There are some real beautiful exhibits. You can easily spend a few hours or half a day in this museum. My kids loved it. 7,9,13and15. I remember going frequently when I was a kid. Definately worth checking out, especially on a nice day. You can combine with a split day at the art museum with a picnic in Wilder Park.

Wilder Park in the Chicago satellite town of Elmhurst contains two excellent small museums and a greenhouse. The core collection of one, the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, was begun in the 1930s by Joseph F. Lizzadro, Sr., a hobbyist and collector. In 1962 the Lizzadro family opened his collection to the public. Lizzadro was an exceptional connoisseur. The Chinese jades he purchased are the best of the best. Also outstanding are Italian micro-mosaics, pictures composed of thousands of tiny pieces of colored stones. There are cameos, mini-dioramas, and a room devoted to rocks and minerals. The gift shop offers many inexpensive items children can purchase for themselves, as well as good artisan jewelry. This museum deserves to be better known and perhaps it will be. I understand that a move to a larger, more modern facility is in the works, so check the website before visiting.

This small museum nestled in a park in the leafy suburb of Elmhurst, Illinois is dedicated to the art of rocks and minerals and is as interesting as it is educational. The upper floor is set aside to display the fact that there really is no end to how creative one can be with precious and semi-precious stones. The lower floor is given over to the science of rocks, including fossils, petrified wood and...I cannot say what else because that would ruin what I found to be the most interesting and surprising stone in their collection.
This is a perfect spot to stop in for awhile before heading to lunch in nearby downtown Elmhurst.
