“Revered statue but not "sacred"”
Review of Alma Mater

I was just telling my son yesterday (he graduated from U of I) that I admire that Alma Mater is a revered and beloved iconic statue and symbol of the university yet, it is not treated as "sacred". Meaning, the students and university will dress her up for fun, depending on the time of year and the events taking place. I was by the statue yesterday and it was the day of the local marathon and AM was adorned in a runner's BIB with a number. How cool! Located at the crossroads of the campus this statue is a must-see if you are here.

The statue has been there "forever", and has a great message. But really, I don't see what all the hype is about. Nice to have it there and all, but I don't see it as a destination or even as an activity...just something interesting to see as you're walking from here to there on campus.

If you do not take at least 100 pictures with Alma Mater while you are a UIUC student, did you really go here? "To thy happy children of the future, those of the past send greetings." Go Illini!

Beloved Alma Mater, flanked by Labor and Learning; however, after the repair job, a small group of students sneaked in a vote to coat this statue to keep it an ugly brown color instead of allowing it to age with patina back into its former lovely, green color! The whole campus votes to get her repaired, then gets blindsided by a tiny group. Such a shame! I am three time graduate from UIUC. First the Chief, now this. :( Anyway, you can get a photo but the lines will be insane during graduation times!

Everyone goes here to get their photo taken, and it's easy to see why. It's inspiring and monumental.
