I visited recently to pick-up a purchase that my wife had made online. And the mall still looks to be in good shape (clean and well maintained) but I do wonder about its future.
Sears, JCP, Carson's, and Macy's are the "anchor" tenants and in the current era where Amazon (and others) are killing brick-and-mortar retail in a wholesale way, one needs to wonder how long a place like Hawthorn Mall can survive.
Now, granted, there's plenty of smaller retailer tenants there. And they added a theatre and a Dave & Buster's recently, so they're diversifying. I just hope that it is enough. I hate the traffic on IL-60 around the mall but I am thankful for the taxes that they pay (not that they're enough to make the local property taxes on homeowners reasonable).
Perhaps the answer is to just move away from Illinois and its corrupt governmental units and just rely on Amazon and Netflix for shopping and entertainment.
