My friend and I spent 2 weeks at Casa De Las Lapas located in near the charming port town of Puerto Viejo. The fully equipped kitchen made this spot key for our low key vacation. The best part of the location is it is just a few steps from the ocean where you can snorkel and hunt for lobster. Make sure you rent some gear or bring your own. I bought my own polarized mask and rented fins Playa Grande is just a short walk away which has amazing surfing. If you walk north to the point there is a bar and restaurant known for their fresh fish. If you are feeling adventurous you can rent a kayak on the beach. We had a blast. Tree was an amazing host and helped with shopping and stocking up with food supplies which keep us on budget. She has been living in this part of Costa Rica for over 7 years and can make lots of recommendation so you feel as if you are a local. Tree lives near by so if there are any emergency you have some to help you navigate the lay of the land. I highly recommend staying here if you want a laid back experience. I would definite go back and have plans to revisit this fall.
