Picturesque, quaint and historic and that's where it ends. Checking in we were treated quite abruptly and shoo'd away until the 4:00 check in. We chose to have lunch in the restaurant till our room was ready. Buffet was served and the cold foods were really not cold... room temperature cottage cheese, pasta salad and potato salad. I did not finish after a taste. Windows were extremely dirty with children's hand prints and smudges-waitstaff said they clean the windows each night... not often enough and made me wonder what else they were not cleaning as needed in the restaurant AND in the kitchen. Understanding that the resort was built in the 1930's we expected it to be a bit tired. Hall windows had wood rot, the ice machine on our floor was not working, the security lock on the door was broken, the bathroom fan did not work, tub was dirty, no screens on the windows, no bell service to schlep our luggage up three floors (no elevators either), bathroom tissue was nearly empty, ..... But the lodge IS close to the falls.

Room Tip: First floor, if you have difficulty with stairs

I have stayed in a number of state/national park facilities and it seems that so many were built in the 70's and have the character of white bread. Not the Dupont Lodge. First of all, it is conveniently located from I-75. Second, the building is absolutely charming!!! Third, the staff could not be more helpful and endearing! Fourth, the restaurant is TRUE home cooking with an incredible selection on the buffet and a large menu of other selections. Fifth, the woods and trails were beautiful. Sixth, a groundhog comes regularly to eat outside the panoramic windows of the restaurant, overlooking the river. SIXTH, MOONBOW!!! The rooms were clean and sufficient, but they are truly the last thing I was thinking about when I left.

After riding on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway we came to see the falls. We parked at the Lodge and hiked down Trail 4 to the falls, hiked back up Trail 6 and enjoyed a fantastic meal at the lodge. It was reasonably priced and the food was excellent quality (we ordered from menu and skipped buffet). Great service too and we enjoyed the bird feeders outside the dining room. We're definitely planning on coming back and staying at the Lodge for a quiet getaway. It really looked fabulous.

The lodge is like stepping back in time. You can see how it would have been beautiful long ago. It's still charming and worth staying a night or two to experience the surrounding area.

Rooms: Ask for a room facing the woods. A lot of rooms face the middle, and it's a terrible view. There are no refrigerators unless needed for a medical reason. I don't recommend bringing in food. Our room had ants. We were moved right away. This is not a high-end hotel. It's a State run property. We weren't there for the rooms, but having a nice view was pleasant.

The dining: We ate dinner here twice. Each night we opted for the buffet. Kids 5 and under eat free. They had a glorious salad bar with so many vegetables. There was a nice selection of local flavors like fried catfish and BBQ.

The amenities: There is a community pool just across the road that is included in your stay. It was a good size and well-kept. There are also tennis courts. Included in your stay are many planned activities. Our favorite was the guided hike to the fire tower to watch the sunset.

Cumberland Falls: It was so busy at night to see the Moonbow. There were so many people. Parking became a problem. People were also smoking in the dark. So, as we were trying to navigate through the crowds, in the dark, down the stairs, we also had to watch out for lit cigarettes. Look at the calendar before you plan your visit. It's best seen during a full moon. Even with the craziness, it was worth it. It was not as busy during the day, but it was still busy.

Overall, I would return here for another night or two in the future.

Room Tip: ask for a room facing the woods

We stayed in a woodland room at the lodge and will NEVER stay there again...even if offered for free. We were greeted into our woodland room with 5 dead roaches on the floor, furniture styled from the 1980's, a bed and frame that probably came from goodwill, an original bathroom that has not been upgraded and the tub was full of mold in the grout and around the edges in the floor. The best thing was the kitchenette...does come with microwave, refrigerator. The staff were very friendly and the Buffett was good with a decent view of the river.

Room Tip: Do NOT get a woodland room!
