My father was transported to the ICU at EMMC from Northern Maine, unexpectedly. Needless to say, when going through a stressful time you can't always take time to shop around for a hotel. We were pleasantly surprised by the Riverside Inn. We stayed in a suite on the 4th floor with a fridge and sitting area (helping for gathering with family to comfort each other). The service is top notch. The continental breakfast is very basic, so we got in the habit of grabbing only coffee (also available near front desk later in the day), cereal or toast - and then headed to the hospital cafeteria later in the morning for more substantial breakfast with other family members.
This is definitely an old building - but staff keep it very, very clean. Any questions or requests I made were accomodated immediately. Laundry is available in a comfortable room with vending machines and seating, with microwave. I was able to do some laundry for my mom while she was sitting with my Dad in the ICU. Yes, the passage way to the hospital is a little eerie at first - but very convenient, well-lit and safe. I am not sure I would stay here for a vacation or shopping trip - my sisters room had wall paper peeling from the walls. I would, however, recommend to anyone visiting family at EMMC. My only suggestions are that the suites should have a tv in the bedroom area - also need mirror over sink/counter (since this is only outlet for hairdryer- which we needed to use since one of us was usually sleeping in a little later in the bedroom).
