We enjoyed the window teaser of an exhibit on trade posters and spent some time in their shop as well as in the Longfellow house. Trade posters are clever and fun and the shop is small, but with a very well chosen selection of stock. Lots of books, postcards and mugs, etc.

Stop in to the gift shop, enjoy one of the rotating exhibits, take a lovely house tour, or settle in for some serious research all in the heart of Portland!

We went for the Wadsworth Longfellow House tour. Viewing the museum display was a good bonus. We bought a book.

I went with my son's elementary school. The kids were learning about Maine in the old days and the famous poet, Longfellow. The tour guide was very patient and gave a great tour. The house is like stepping back in time. My son and I love history and learned alot!

We come to Portland a couple of times a year for an "urban fix" for my wife who gave up a happy life in Chicago to come to Maine to Mary me. We're both history buffs, which first brought us to the adjacent Longfellow Homestead, after which we visited the museum and spent another fascinating hour and a half. The exhibits here are not huge (there's no room), but they are thoughtfully curated and always interesting. The bookstore also has a good collection of books and other materials for those interested in Maine's history. And no fan of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow or home life in the mid-nineteenth century should miss a tour of the adjacent Longfellow homestead.
