We have been going to the Bell of Maine for 9 years now and we would not go anywhere else. It is a great place to relax and is close to so much. Jim and Mina are outstanding owners. It is family friendly, so much that our kids(ages 11 and 10) have friends that they look forward to seeing all year long. Yes route 1 can be a bear, but take that in stride and you will have a great time!!!!!!

We looked at several other locations on the Rt 1 stretch and were lucky enough to pass just as they were removing the no vacancy sign. We stopped in and were so pleasantly surprised that we're planning on returning again later this year. The owner was as friendly and helpful as could be, and the property was wonderfully maintained. Quite contrary to another review that decried this as a 'tourist hell', we felt a wonderful sense of community, with many families returning to the resort the same time each year because they enjoyed it so well. Twice during the week the owner hosted cookouts for the families staying there, with each family bringing side dishes and desserts to make a great big pot-luck meal.

You can see the beach from the resort, but it IS still about a mile walk. My wife and I walked (why not? it's what we do once we get to the beach anyway) but if you wanted, the trolley stops nearby and will drive you to the beach. Directly across the street is the best seafood restaurant in the Wells-Ogunquit area (Mike's) and about 200 feet up the street is the best doughnut/breakfast shop (Congdon's). After staying here, we won't go to a hotel room again, that's for sure!

If you can, get one of the cottages with the screened-in porch. The mosquitoes come in off the marsh at night, and if you'd like to sit out after dark, you'll appreciate the screening.

We always prefer to stay at Belle of Maine if they have cottages available. Location is perfect for us, easy to get to and from our Maine destinations. Always clean, Jim and Mina are very accommodating. I love the little porches, the outdoor hot tub and the friendly people.

Our first trip to the East Coast and we hit 'GOLD'. We loved our stay at the Belle of Maine. Their beautiful grounds, covenient location, and delightful hosts, Jim & MIna, gave us the vacation of our dreams. Our two children loved the pool, games, and close proximety to the beach. I was really impressed when I received a personal invitation from the 'Belle Family' to join them for a fish fry they were hosting for all their guest. I felt welcomed and treated like family. We've started a new family tradition of joining the Skeats every year. We've booked for next year--come join us! Thank you 'Belle of Maine' for a wonderful family vacation!

Sincerely,
The Boothby Family

Regardless of what you may glean from the photos on their web site this place is no "Belle". The motel and cabins are located right on the busy main drag, not close to the beach, and definitely not within walking distance. It's tourist hell.
There's a hundred yard or so paved road with barracks style huts and a "luxury suites" building, where we stayed. The landscaping is concrete and pebbles and there are no pleasant areas in which to sit, stroll or take in the so-called view of the backwater tidal swamp.. The "luxury suites" are poorly designed and have the ambiance of a dentist's office waiting room. All that's missing is the aquarium. Apparently designed from a "do-it-yourself" design program. When we arrived, there were about 25 children playing in the road between the cabins and a couple dozen adults drinking beer and smoking at the picnic tables. Not exactly an atmosphere conducive to relaxation. The pool and hot tub are surrounded by a chain link fence giving it the feeling of a cage, it is not landscaped and there is no privacy whatsoever. They are both very small.
Moments after arrival, realizing my mistake, I asked for a refund and was told that no refunds are given.
If you want a beach vacation try Mexico, California or Florida, Coastal Maine has bad traffic, is cold and rainy and the prices are no bargain.
