This staid institution is one of the older and great concert venues in America. It's one of the original "sheds" (like Pine Knob or Concord), and there's been a ton of great music made there over the decades. On this last trip I was pleasantly bowled over by their extensive renovations, many not just cosmetic, either. And apparently they're not finished, the coming year will see more changes made to the audience area itself, I was told.

If you're a local, you owe it to your local cultural scene to keep going there and supporting them. You'd be surprised how few great sheds there are in the country. And if you're a tourist, it would be eminently worth seeing one of your favorite musical artists in this setting.

This year saw the finishing of the renovations of the complex bringing this concert venue into the 21st Century. This coincided with Columbia's 50th Anniversary celebration! They have added a greater selection of food and there are many micro Brewery beers too. They have upgraded the stage, lighting and sound systems so you will not be disappointed when you see your favorite act. MWP is just the right size for a great atmosphere and you are still able to see the stage from every covered seat. If the weather is nice the lawn seats provide a cheaper choice, still great sound (some say better) and you have two large screens for the close ups of the act. The season is winding down now, I will now being looking forward to seeing the line up for next year.

The venue is great. Lots of good food stands (depending on the event). The seating is comfortable. Wine in the woods is an exceptional event as well (recommended if you like live music, wine and relaxing outside).

I believe that people generally write about the ARTIST they came to see...and WANT to write positive things about the show, but do NOT focus on the VENUE.
Merriweather holds a lot of people and therefore is one of the go-to venues for big name bands/performers. However, the place is typically overcrowded, may lawn seats have NO view of the artist, without binoculars and only if they are taller than 6 feet. You just ask yourself, why did I shell out all of this money to listen and barely see the artist and have people constantly stepping around or ON me, before and during the show?
Maybe the strategy is to only go to lesser-known performances and actually have some personal space and a spot from which you can "see" the show.
For many GA ticket holders, I am not sure you can honestly say, "Yeah, I SAW Jack Johnson at Merriweather".
Wish we had a better venue.
