I have been going to Cape Cod for over 40 years. I've stayed in many different towns and in many different inns, but one place I always end up returning to over and over again is the Old Sea Pines Inn. Sure, there are inns with perfect paint jobs and fancier antique furniture and gourmet breakfasts, but this inn is like an old friend, comfortable and dependable. Steve and Michelle are perfect innkeepers, helpful but not overbearing and always friendly. Set off a bit from the main road through Brewster, it is a pleasant retreat from the bustle of wherever you came from. The old fashioned porch replete with rockers is the perfect spot to enjoy coffee and read the paper in the morning or sip a glass of wine in the evening. There is a choice of room types; those in the inn (a former girls' school) that give one a sense of life in an earlier time and those in the back cottage, more modern but quite pleasant. A leisurely breakfast of eggs or pancakes along with fresh fruit and cereals can be enjoyed in the sunlit dining room or on the covered open-air back deck. Conveniently located at the elbow of the Cape, one is within easy driving distance to bay beaches, ocean beaches, bike paths, ponds, and myriad restaurants. Though I'm sure some will quibble with the minor glitches that come with any older building, this establishment has something far more important -- a friendly and authentic character. So if you're looking for an elegant boutique style or trendy spot, perhaps this is not for you. But if you want a place that offers charm and relaxation and a human touch, consider the Old Sea Pines Inn.
