“Flying through the air with the greatest of ease!!!”
Reviewed 13 October 2011

We took a zipline canopy tour with this company on October 6th - FANTASTIC! The guides were great and we had 3 other couples in our group. They made this experience very memorable. I was a bit worried at first but the way it was handled was completely professional with humor thrown in. Awesome and would do it again in a heartbeat!

We had a great time on the Deerfield Valley Canopy Tour this weekend! Our guides Shahid and Joan were fun, professional, safety-conscious and a general pleasure to be with. Highly recommended!

“AWESOME - These folks really make your tour amazing and special”
Reviewed 25 September 2011

Zoar operates a zipline tree-canopy tour from around March to Nov each year. This is in the Berkshire Mountains of NW Mass. It's a small town setting, out in the country (so don't expect a lot of 5 star hotels/restaurants - though Springfield Mass is only an hour away).

Details coming - but the biggest deal? The guides and ground crew are wonderful! They know you are scared (a little), and they know you want a vacation experience. Sarah and Meghan (and Kevin, the driver!) all set us at ease, got us talking, bonded with us, so by the end of the tour, the whole group had opened up, shared and bonded. We didn't all sing kum-ba-ya, and probably won't stay in touch (it was just a 3-3.5 hr tour), but we left with warm feelings for each other! If you want to spend max time in challenging zipping, maybe this isn't your place. But if you aren't a Mountain Dew Ad candidate and you want a lifetime experience - this is right up your alley!

For the tour, you're up in the trees on platforms and zipping through the canopy from one tree to the next. Limit 8 per tour with 2 guides so everyone fits on the platform. There is some waiting as all ten have to zip before you can move on to the next zipline. Yes - the course had 11 ziplines, 2 or 3 repels (belays really, the guide controls your descent) and 2 rope bridges. The ziplines are the main event and the longest was about 600+ feet, the tallest about 85 ft off the ground, if I recall correctly.

Ok - so that sounds scary, and will my glasses fall off? will I fall? No - these guys are serious about safety. You have a sturdy harness (not glamorous in the pics, but certainly safe) and are ALWAYS locked to a tree or zipline (thru a dual locking system). You have a helmet and your glasses will probably be fine on. If you need them for distance, yes wear them! You need to see Sarah's arm commands as you zip through. You can bring items in zipped up pockets, but they may bang against a tree (unlikely).

Also - this is a progressive course, meaning each time you get challenged a little bit more. There's a practice area that looked a bit scary to me starting out, 12 feet off the ground (oh my)! After a drive up the mountain side, you climb an easy ~10 step wide ladder, at a resonable angle. Not so bad. (No telephone pole climbs!). Then you jump. That 1st one is hard, but once you've done that - the rest is just more of the same. You do 4 at a slower, get comfortable pace. Then at half time (snack! DO tell them about your food allergies), you are a PRO now, and are up to the picked up pace! Exciting!

The tour is 3 - 3.5 hrs long. Wear comfortable clothes. Jeans are fine. Bug spray is a good idea. I didn't use sunscreen and was fine (I usually need it). Your car is close by, you'll leave any gear (purse, etc) in your locked car. Schedule in advance - they book up. Fall/Autumn would be awesome! There are plaques on the trees giving some good info, but otherwise this is about zipping, light on learning the biology of the actual tree canopy.

I'd sure do it again!

“Fantastic outdoor fun with the family”
Reviewed 10 September 2011

Went on Sept.2 to celebrate my hubby's 42nd birthday. We stayed on the campgrounds in a cabin tenet which was much easier than putting up our own tent. The cots were quite comfortable and a good size. The grill was a bit small for a family of four. We ziplined and LOVED it..the staff is friendly and supportive of scardy cats like myself. I finished the entire 11 ziplines and did not give into my fears as they train you well before they let you on. Too bad due to hurricane Irene we were not able to do the whitewater rafting. Will come back...it was a bit expensive, but hey live life!! The only complaint I have is that the kids wanted a campfire to do smores but the manager who was fantatsic, Philip, was out to dinner and we did not find anyone to light the communal pit . Showers and bathrooms were spotless!!!
