We have tried all 3 of the Essex clam shacks: Woodmans, the supposed inventor of the fried clam, Farnums and now Essex seafood. My wife prefers Farnums for clams, I think Woodmans are better, but Essex has the best onion rings. Pf the three Woodmans has the most history, Farnums has slightly better food overall but parking is nearly impossible. Essex is smaller but has ample off street parking. They all have similar interior ambiance...clam shack.... the view from the Essex is of nothing where Fsrnum has a nice marsh view. Woodmans has very good outside seating and the best view.
So Farnums, then Woodmams and 3rd is Essex . All are very good but no one beats Bob's in Kittery Maine.

Not as flashy as either Farnhams or Woodmans this smaller venue has excellent fried seafood and is good value for your money. Keep your eye out or you'll drive right by but they have sufficient parking and relatively rapid service.

Rustic, country atmosphere. No table service. Place your order at the window and pick it up when your number is called. Reasonable prices. Great if you are looking for a typical New England experience.

This is the place to go for clams or any fried seafood in the area. Forget some of the other highly advertised places in Essex and Ipswich. Way too commercial and touristy. This place where the locals go. It has excellent fresh seafood with ginormous portions. This time we did takeout. Each of us had a bowl of thick and rich clam chowder and shared a juicy whole-clam boat. Hats off for great food that jy family has been enjoying for almost 30 years. Always a stop when we are visiting our family on the North Shore.

Small restaurant just across the Gloucester border you can bring a cooler in with you and eat in the rough if you want local seafood is the theme and a lot cheaper than a full restaurant counter service only
