Herman Melville's home, Arrowhead is a self tour of the house with explanations of the rooms, furnishings and artifacts that surrounded Hermann Melville in his later years. Vignettes describe the amazing life of Melville and his many years at sea. Those experiences prepared him to write many books, stories and poems. It was at Arrowhrad that he developed the material that resulted in his fascination with fairies of which he wrote a number of pieces. An outbuiding contains several exquisite fairy villages.

If you are in the Berkshires, you should stop by Arrowhead. It was very delightful. The house, barn, and surroundings are well kept. They will give you a self-guiding tour book. Or, I think they might give tours, not sure. You can take photos,if you want. They had a fairy exhibit. It was very nice, and, quiet. It was very interesting.Enjoy!

Not a huge Melville fan, yet recognize his place among the literary greats. Was in the area to visit Edith Wharton's The Mount and couldn't pass this up without stopping in. What would have made this $15 stop pay off was leaving there with a richer appreciation for Melville and it just didn't happen. We were not offered a guided tour. Instead, you could have downloaded a smart phone app to get info. My phone was dying, so not an option for me. Then there was a binder in each room with pages devoted to giving the background on each item of interest in the room. Why not just info near the items, themselves. Would have been much easier. The whole thing was just too D-I-Y. Having been to Emily Dickinson's Homestead the previous day and leaving there inspired to read everything she wrote, the Melville experience paled by comparison. Still it was a beautiful period house.

Herman Melville is now considered one of America's great writers, Moby Dick being his crowning achievment. However, this wasn;t always the case and a visit to Arrowhead explains his story in interesting detail. The guide's 1 hour narration was thorough and excellent . The house was well-maintained, including original items belonging to the Melville family. The museum, a former barn, had limited displays, was a little haphazard and the space itself not especially warm (mood, not temperature). Some interesting and relevant books and other items on sale. Grounds have some appeal but a rainy day limited this option. Having read Moby Dick earlier this year, this visit greatly enhanced my understanding of the author's life.

There is a small museum/ gift shop here. You can also, on the hour, take a tour of Herman Melville 's home. It was interesting to see the spot where he wrote the famous novel about Moby- Dick, and hear about some of the things that influenced his writing. Plan to spend an hour or more here; more time if you want to walk around the grounds outside.
