I lunched there recently, sat in the area beyond the kitchen.
I had a small bean soup, which I thought was a bit watery, expected it to
be thicker. For the main course, Corazon de asado (grilled beef heart),
over-cooked, seems to be the Latino way, bordered on shoe leather.
Beef heart when prepared properly is very good and tender, this wasn't.
Service was good. The restaurant was clean.

This place is historical, is not fancy nor even cute but the food is really good! Beans soup is the highlight I dont even like beans but this is just soooooo good! Also in their menu you can find a lot of Nicaragua dishes such as "Boquitas" (entree) and side dishes, like "Baho", "Adobado" (pickled pork chops) and Udder! Yes! Udder, you gotta try it! It is quite exotic and a delicatessen for Nicaraguan

I'm a bit reluctant about writing a review of this place on trip advisor as it is a truly wonderful authentic nicaraguan gem still undiscovered by tourists. But it being a family-run business I figure it's good to give them some costumers! You go here for the bean soup, that is really their speciality. I'm not a huge fan of bean-soup, but this was really really good. It is so cheap, huge portions (I couldn't finish a "small") served with strong cheese and flatbread. If you want to get out of the tourist trail, I suggest you look up this place although it may take some time to locate.

Family-run business a couple of blocks south east from the Cathedral / Central Market. The formal name is Mississippi, although everyone knows it as La Cucaracha. There is no sign, so look out for the open doors, tables inside and bustling kitchen at the back. For the coolest seating walk straight through the kitchen to the back terrace.
What makes La Cucaracha special to us is the fact that it hasn't changed much for over 30 years, and has had the same family owners all this time ('the name 'Cucaracha' - cockroach - is the nickname of the previous generation boss, it's certainly not a comment on the hygiene!). The restaurant is popular every day of the week with local families who think nothing of a bottle of rum to wash down their lunch before heading back to work. And what a lunch: for starters the 'boca' (mixed fried pieces of pork and beef) goes so naturally with the rum that it's actually listed on the drinks list (this meat can be quite fatty so won't be to everyone's taste). For main course the cauldron of 'sopa de frijoles' (bean soup) is the house staple - served with tortilla and optionally grated cheese, eggs, lime and chilli; it's sized small, medium or large (come hungry for this one!). Some of the more exotic traditional meat dishes include cow's breast ('ubre') in sauce and grilled cow's heart ('corazon'). For the less adventurous there is grilled chicken and beef steak. The fried cheese is also a good pairing for the cold Toña beer.
The staff don't speak any English, but are friendly so you'll get the message across if you don't speak Spanish. Note this is a lunch place - it's not open in evenings.
