We almost overlooked Boukie's, thinking it was going to be a generic "Sero's-style" Greek restaurant. It wasn't anything close to this. The bread--warm little pitas, arrive in a basket with a garlic dip that could sway even those iffy on garlic to indulge. The pitas are baked on an open fire oven that can be seen if you are seated in the middle of the restaurant. The pure white garlic dip is a marvel, made of just garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper. It has the consistency of sour cream. We were also served a dip made of maybe oregano and some seeds in olive oil--also quite good.

We've eaten at Boukie's three times in the last week! We tried lemon rice soup (excellent), southwestern chicken soup (a nice flavorful corn taste) and lentil soup (tasty). We tried Arrayes--flat pitas filled with lamb and beef, onion, parsley and spices. Delicious. We returned and tried Chicken Shawarma. Very good.

We returned again on New Year's Eve and tried Maqaniq, a kind of aromatic lamb sausage appetizer, spinach fattoush salad and split an order of lamb chops--a bit pricier than other menu items but then, lamb chops usually are. The chops were served with rice. All delicious.

We will be back for breakfast. Our attentive lunch and dinner waiter mentioned he cooks breakfast. Service is great. Boukie's offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Reservations can be made. They are open M-Th 8am--10pm, F-Sa 8am - until at times 4am! Boukie's is across the street from Fifth Avenue bar on Fifth in downtown Royal Oak. Sunday hours are 8am-9pm. Boukie's is located next to Woody's. Boukie's also has an entrance door on Washington. Carry out is available and many carry out orders were leaving this place while we sat and ate.

In house dining is pleasant. Boukie's has a large window overlooking the pleasant street scene of RO on 5th--it looked fabulous and slightly surreal with the blue holiday lights glowing on NY's Eve.

Stop in just to try anything--anything at all. You'll be back for more. Promise.
