We have enjoyed our stays at Spirit of Gitche Gummi very much. Even though we don't take a lakeside room, there is a cozy sitting room with beautiful lake views where we could take our scones and coffee. The last week in June is when the lupines bloom, and they are on full display in the garden. The hosts are terrific!

My husband and I stayed here in the fall of 2012. We needed a quiet retreat space and found it here. The first night, the only room available was Get-A-Way, but we were able to move into the larger, Moonrise room after that. The host was very friendly and good communication through booking to check out. She did everything to help us feel comfortable and enjoy our stay. And also gave us a little bit of history of the place, including the "haunted" ruin next door.

The Bed & Breakfast is in a nicely updated building which now hosts a coffee and gift shop. I was not bothered by the downstairs business noise at all. In fact, it was pleasant to wake up, knowing that coffee and yummy scones were just downstairs waiting for us.

The Get-A-Way room is a very small room that overlooks the parking lot and road. It has everything you need including a bathroom and place to sit. There is only one way onto the bed though, the other side of the bed is against the wall. Also, the noise at night on the road was constant until the early hours, so if you stay here and are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. It was nicely done and I loved the painting on the walls.

We enjoyed the Moonrise room, with a little more space, larger bathroom and the view to the lake. The shower in the bathroom has a window in it, but it is covered for privacy. All the decor is tastefully and artfully done with a sophisticated yet a little minimal "up north" look. I could easily live in a place like this! And the sherry in the room was a nice touch. We also took advantage of the little sitting room upstairs to play some games and relax in.

The grounds are lovely too, bring your walking shoes as the paths slope down toward Lake Superior. There is an outdoor fire ring and then a path that will take you to an overlook of the lake. There is no access to the lake as the place is situated high above the shoreline. But you can sit there and enjoy the views in a wooded area.

One thing to keep in mind is that Spirit of Gitche Gumee is a little distance from any other restaurants and shops. Once you're there, it's a little drive to go get something to eat or to site see. But that also adds to the peaceful atmosphere of the place. It holds a charm and a bit of history of Lake Superior. We would definitely be open to staying here again, I can still taste the cinnamon scones!

Room Tip: Book a room with a lake view to avoid highway noises at night.

This is a really sweet b&b. The owners are great! Fresh baked scones and coffee in the morning were warm and lovely. There's great rock climbing nearby if that's what you're looking for. One of the nights we stayed there we wandered out back behind the b&b and lit a fire and there were fireflies all over the place and it was really magical. I definitely recommend it.

This is a cozy little B&B and a great place to stay on the North Shore. The location is great with several state parks very close by and just a short drive to a nearby small towns with restaurants, etc. The hosts were fantastic--very friendly, knowledgeable about the local area (gave great recommendations for everything from restaurants to hiking trails), and generally just friendly folks. I stayed in Room 1, which was the smallest room but perfect for a solo traveler. No TVs in the rooms but free wifi. As other reviewers have noted, there are also adjustable beds, complimentary coffee and scones (a small coffee shop is downstairs), a private deck, and a trail leading down to a bench overlooking the lake. Spirit of Gitche Gumee is highly recommended!

Gitche Gumee was a very lovely place to spend a couple of nights. The lakeview room featured not only a lake view but deer sightings too. The view of the lake and the privacy and quiet of the property were perfect for relaxing...and the scones and coffee were first class!
