Historic and quirky wealthy family on hilltop.
Not that cheap, but expect to spend a half day here. Long pretty drive up through the woods, stunning view point, then park and visit stables brilliantly converted into restaurant.Interesting menu, including daily homemade specials. Shuttles to the house on top.
Full of Nouveau / baronial architecture, design, furniture.
Guides very knowledgeable and friendly (one young lady had studied in Nwcastle, UK).
Possibly not great for kids?

We were driving around the lake, and decided to stop here because I remembered seeing a recommendation in TA forum. Glad we did. This place is beautiful. I expected the mansion to be bigger because it is called "castle." Still it is very nice and impressive. You must park in the main parking near Carriage House, then must take their trolley bus to get up to the mansion. But before getting to the carriage house, you must stop and park at the first small parking lot if you want to see the waterfall and the Pebble(big rock). It is one-way and you can't come back. Also there is a overlook you can stop before getting to the Carriage House. We enjoyed the short walk to the waterfall and the scenic overlook, but had to rush a little to catch the last trolley bus. We were informed about the wedding going on and the last bus would be leaving earlier than usual, after we bought the tickets at the gate. We were there already and would have bought the tickets anyway, but I think they should have informed about the shortened operation hours before selling the tickets. After getting to the mansion, we were told to go see the backyard lawn first because they would be closing for the wedding soon.
The historical mansion was interesting to see. You are not allowed to touch almost everything in there. Few items you can touch included children's clothes (replica) and kitchen tools.
The staff were nice and friendly, and the view from the top was amazing. We just wish we were not rushed.
Not a place for everyone...skip if you do't enjoy historical houses or need a place for toddlers to run around. The lawn area is beautifully maintained, but not that big.

Brought friends from CA here over Columbus weekend. We all loved it. Do some online research first to know which entrance to use and admission prices. The entrance for the tour is well marked and the gate attendant friendly and helpful. The waterfall and overlook stops are on the way up and the exit is on another road, so keep that in mind if you want to see them. Only disappointment was the Carriage House. They were busy and appeared to be short staffed, and we had to forego lunch as we were a bit limited on time. There were plenty of empty tables on the patio and in the carriage house, but 30-40 min wait time. Nice gift shop in separate building.

I had last been here about 18 years ago, and the house has had quite a makeover. Fascinating to stroll around. There are lovely views, but the leaves were late this year. If you want to stroll to the waterfall, do it on the way up as there is a different road down. The entrance fee is quite pricy.

We brought our friends from Canada here. We bring all of our out of state visitors here!! The restaurant can be slow service at times but the food is good. You can spend an hour or all day here and it's geared for all physical abilities. Young children might be bored with the tour.
