Really beautiful and different memorial. Great design that makes you experience the disappearances of the twin towers. Also great views of the new skyline. We walked from Jersey City, long but relaxing. You can catch the ferry back to Warren Street.

Empty Sky is a September 11 memorial in Jersey City. It is located at the mouth of the Hudson River in Liberty State Park across from the World Trade Centre site. The memorial is dedicated to the 746 individuals from New Jersey killed in the World Trade Centre in 1993 and in the September 11 attacks as well as those who died on September 11th at the Pentagon and in Shanksville. Empty Sky features twin walls transecting a gently sloped mound anchored by a granite path directed toward Ground Zero. Each wall soars 30 feet high and stretches just over 206 feet long – the exact width of the World Trade Centre towers if they were lying on their sides. The names of the 746 victims are etched into the memorial. The memorial was co-authored by Frederic Schwartz and Jessica Jamorz. Construction began in May 2009. The memorial was dedicated on September 10, 2011 (a day before the 10th anniversary of the attacks). Funding for the memorial was provided by the State of New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the New Jersey Building Association. The name of the memorial comes from Bruce Springsteen’s song “Empty Sky” which is about the “empty sky” where the towers once stood.

If you're visiting Liberty State Park, then you should take a few moments to see the 9/11 memorial. It's right by the historic 1830s train station.

By the entrance you have some pieces from the Twin Towers, and then behind that the memorial with the New York skyline in the background.

I probably would not have made a special trip to the park just to see this, but if you are visiting the park, it should be part of your plans.

I wish I could have spent more time here, reflecting on the tragedy and loss of lives. I thought this was a beautiful way to honor those who lost their lives on that sad day.

It is a nice memorial to all of the victims of 9/11. I didn’t walk down and read off all of the names.
