Been going here since childhood, and it has only gotten better with time!

Known for their bbq, the special fall menu is equally delightful.

French onion soup is among the best I have had. Worth the trip and the wait if its a busy Friday or Saturday!

The Mason Jar is a consciously rustic sort of charming-looking restaurant on Rte. 202 in Mahwah. The restaurant is comprised of a number of rooms that almost feel like they've been attached at separate times because sometimes you have to step up or down to get between rooms. There is a large bar in the middle and they have a smoker for bbq.

Besides their bbq offerings their food is generally a variety of American cuisine with some Italian and Mexican items. We don't eat here often because it's been our experience that sometimes you get good food and service and sometimes not so much. It had been a while since our last visit and this time we came for lunch.

We got seated immediately and since we were here at an unpopular hour, there weren't a lot of diners there. So we hoped that service would be on point, but our server took a long time to get to us and indeed was not terribly attentive throughout our visit. He was pleasant, though. We were pretty hungry and decided to start by sharing the baked brie off of the fall menu. It is listed as topped with brown sugar and raspberry preserves and served with baguette slices.

It took forever, but eventually it came in a baking dish and was almost liquid. I know brie is a soft cheese and that's the appeal, but this was overbaked so that it had no shape and indeed it had separated with oil pools on top along with some globs of raspberry. We probably should have sent it back but we were hungry and started eating it. The baguette slices were stale. The brie itself wasn't particularly delicious. We really should have sent it back but we didn't -- partially because we were hungry and also because we didn't see our server. But at the same time the kitchen really should have had some quality control and not sent it out.

Hubby got a bbq platter of some sort and he thought it was good but not great. I got the Ally's salad with mozzarella, avocado and plum tomatoes dressed with a balsamic vinaigrette. Although I did not request it on the side, the dressing arrived on the side in a little cup too small for the size of the salad. Thankfully the waiter did some back fairly soon so I could ask for another little cup of vinaigrette. The salad was alright but not terribly flavorful.

At least this time, our lunch was not a great experience with OK to not good food and inattentive service.

Tonight we ate at mason jar this week and they were so gracious and handling such a large group. They have a side room which was attractive and comfortable plus the bar in the middle as well as smaller areas more intimate on the other side of the bar. The waiters worked faster than I’ve ever seen any service group move and they were very accommodating in every way.
Now to the food: the butter not squash soup was incredible and my husband and I had it two nights in a row. They make it from scratch there as well as the rolls that are delivered to each table which were delicious as well. Fajitas were good , the Reuben we were told was good as well. Our friends loved the desserts they ordered and the burnt tips we had were unusually tender. The house salad was enough for two. We will return when we visit the area again if not just for the butternut squash soup!

We were visiting the Watchtower Educational Center with 51 people with all dietary needs. I called the Mason Jar and talked with Emily who said sure we can accommodate all of you. She was right, not only were all 51 dinners hot delicious but the wait staff went all out for our group. We even got to meet the owner and his family. If you are looking for truly the best BBQ or butternut squash soup, this is the place for you. Excellent place for business meetings, wedding reception or showers.

Great service and good drinks. I had the brisket which fell apart on the fork. Great smoke rings in meat with awesome flavor. I would also recommend the burnt ends. This is definitely a Mahwah secret.
