We have eaten at 8 of the 10 best restaurants ranked in Eat Out. We thought amongst the 8, this was the most outstanding value for money. The three "extras", bread with various butters, an amuse bouche and petite fours were very generous in the price for a restaurant ranked at number 3 in Eat Out.

The food was actually generous in portions for this style of restaurant but some dishes lacked distinct flavour, mushroom starter for example, and some dishes were "heavy" in presentation, for example leeks on trout main course dish, impossible to cut and too large for a delicate mouthful!

Staff did not have the finesse we have experienced in the other 8 top 10 restaurants we've experienced.

Location and view superb.

We would not rate this for the food or overall experience at 3, as Eat Out have done. Nearer number 10 I am afraid.

However, how lucky are we to be in the position to be so picky about a wonderful restaurant in a great location!

The food is good and service is friendly. The views can't be beaten. Something has changed however. The service wasnt as good as it has previously been. Serving and clearing the table is sloppy. We needed to ask for empty glasses to be removed and for drinkiing water. To do this we needed to get up and look for our waiter several times.

First of all the food was absolutely outstanding!
But, the staff...
We had to wait for a almost an hour before they started with the canapés and the aperitif (the aperitif arrived with the last canapé). Then they stuffed 3 canapés, 3 starters and two main courses down our throats in just 1 hour time, and every course with another wine!
When we ordered the tasting menu, we let the waitress know that my husband does not eat cheese. She went to the kitchen to discuss this with the chef, and upon her return, she explained that the Camembert would be replaced by something else, surprise of the chef.
Unfortunately we both got the Camembert. Miscommunication in the kitchen. Another staf member approached us and apologised by saying that the waitress had forgotten to inform the kitchen, so that she was lying. At the end of the day my husband had the cheese and not something else.
Taking away two glasses of the table, the waitress emptied one glass in the other so she could carry it upside down to the kitchen!
The ‘alleged’ sommelier didn’t know anything about the wines except for what was on the label of the bottle. For every wine (7 different wines!) he used the same text lines...
For this level of restaurant, one would expect a trained staff!

The food and setting at Waterkloof is certainly fine dining. Each dish is an eclectic melange of different flavours, textures and styles. It could easily aspire to 3 Michelin stars in the European context. However this is South Africa and the food is out of context. The portions are tiny. Starters about 2 mouthsful and mains about 4! Just don't come hungry. The view from the restaurant is one of the best in the Western Cape. If art on a plate is your bag then this is the place for you. Just bring Pounds, US Dollars or Euros as it's very expensive in Rands! On a Monday lunch the restaurant was 70% full so clearly they are meeting a market need.

The food was spectacular. It is pricy but definitely worth it.

The setting was beautiful, especially the view from the balcony when the wind wasn't blowing.

The red wine, specifically, was very good as well.

Overall, it ticked all the right boxes.
