Description: The Camphors at Vergelegen signature restaurant takes its name from the ancient giant camphor trees, planted in 1700, situated in front of the historic Homestead. The restaurant overlooks expansive lawns and beautiful trees complementing the overall dining experience and creating an ambiance never to be forgotten. After only a year of operation, Camphors was awarded place in the Top Ten restaurants in South Africa, in The Eat Out DStv Restaurant Awards 2014, as well as being the Regional Winner - Wine Tourism Restaurant - in the 2014 Great Wine Capitals. Vergelegen produces classical wine varietals and the ever changing menu reflects a modern take on classical international and local food dishes, specifically designed to complement Vergelegen's award-winning wines. The Sommelier and his restaurant team guide diners through the menu and recommended wine selections to ensure a relaxed and memorable food and wine experience. Regrettably, Camphors is not child-friendly.

We enjoyed a Old Year's Night Dinner extravaganza at Camphors with special friends. While it was very expensive, the experience was definitely worth the expense. It was a superb evening with excellent wine paired with top class food of the likes of top Michelin star restaurants. The food was delicious, tastefully presented and beautifully crafted. The service was subtle and professional. We were proud to showcase a top South African restaurant to overseas guests.

Beautiful setting. Faultless service and fare. Four of us had 5 bottles of wine (we had a chauffeur), just about everything on the menu, and including the tip the bill was only $420. Back home this would have cost us $1,000+. Outstanding fine dining at it's best.

Stunning location - definitely take a walk after / before eating here. The food was really delicious - my favorites were the lamb and the goat milk dessert - but we were kind of let down by the service. We are younger than the average guests (35) - at least during that lunch - and we felt not taken seriously. The menu and the dishes were explained to other tables but not to us. After waiting for 10min we asked if we could have an aperitif and later relatedly for fill ups. Nevertheless we had a great afternoon at Vergelegen.

This was the best dining experience of our recent trip to SA and we tried a few!
Firstly the surroundings are calming, peaceful and exquisite. We were shown to our table as requested on the terrace/patio. There the five star service began. We chose the tasting menu with wine pairings. Only one course was not to my taste, a risotto based around the sunflower. It was too heavy as an early course. As I didn't finish the dish the staff were keen to know if it was ok. When I expressed my opinion they didn't make me feel ungrateful, they genuinely were interested. The fish course that followed with an Asian broth was mind blowing and I could have eaten three dishes of it. The staff recommended a rest between the middle courses which was very much appreciated. They poured two glasses of red one a premium and one a reserve, it was good to taste these whilst we waited. The lamb dish that followed was visionary and so tasteful.
The only remark we would make is that all of our fellow diners except one family with young children had made an effort on the dress front. They were almost in what we would describe as beach attire. It is such a special place surely it is not too much trouble to dress appropriately?
Following the long lazy lunch we just caught the wine tasting room where we could only buy the wines as it was too close to closing time. We purchased a number of the wines we had enjoyed at lunch. There is one entry level wine, a Grenache I think, that was only 85ZAR a bottle and my husband loved it as much as their reserve reds.
The gardens are a delight and a gentle stroll through the hydrangeas and roses topped of a very special afternoon. Thank you to all of the staff.

Thank Juliegolf
