Description: The Camphors at Vergelegen signature restaurant takes its name from the ancient giant camphor trees, planted in 1700, situated in front of the historic Homestead. The restaurant overlooks expansive lawns and beautiful trees complementing the overall dining experience and creating an ambiance never to be forgotten. After only a year of operation, Camphors was awarded place in the Top Ten restaurants in South Africa, in The Eat Out DStv Restaurant Awards 2014, as well as being the Regional Winner - Wine Tourism Restaurant - in the 2014 Great Wine Capitals. Vergelegen produces classical wine varietals and the ever changing menu reflects a modern take on classical international and local food dishes, specifically designed to complement Vergelegen's award-winning wines. The Sommelier and his restaurant team guide diners through the menu and recommended wine selections to ensure a relaxed and memorable food and wine experience. Regrettably, Camphors is not child-friendly.

Came back to Camphors after a couple of month to check whether our extraordinary experience in november 17 was just a lucky punch. It wasn’t. Also the new menu with the new wine pairings offers really remarkable combinations:
Starting with a beautiful carrot, ricotta finds smoked dish accompanied with a delicate and well balances chardonnay reserve 2016.
Followed by a creamy snook which made the otherwise pretty acid 2016 schaapenberg reserve sauvignon blank just smooth and beautiful.
The main fish course was hake - a bit too rich for me - but again an nice match with the semillion res. 2016
An awesome pair is the springbok tatar with the 2014 shiraz - just sensational.
The maincourse i would call a camphors classic: five types of lamb with their two top bordeaux style top reds - the 2012 GVB and the Cabernet Sauvignon of the same vintage. Not being a bordeaux lover, the GVB is just a remarkable wine.
The menu ended with a nice pre dessert an a pineapple-cashew dish and a nice 2013 straw wine.
So overall, to me, their concept and the way the live up to it is just unmatched: the best wine-food pairings in za presented by really attentive and competent staff.

Yes, my springbok carpaccio was out of this world, the hake special and fantastic, the plum sorbet delicous. It was a special for me because i am allegic to nuts. But what really lifts this restaurant above the rest is the service. Waiters smiling, talking, answering questions with pleasure. Christo, the manager/somelier is so friendly and his knowledge about food and wine is spectecular. I enjoyed every minute of the conversation with him. What a nice time at Vergelegen.

My husband and I celebrated my company’s 18th birthday at Camphors. We celebrate every year at one of the top 10 restaurants, and Camphors deserves it’s rating!
What I love about their menu is their clever design of grading/indicating what dishes are light and delicate or full and richer. This helps especially if you are not a big eater ..... or if you want portions that are more substantial.
My favourites were the chef’s complimentary cheese snacks and the seeded, gluten and wheat free bread with lavender butter made on the farm where they drizzle farm honey over. Delicious!
My husband had the 4 course Summer Harvest Menu starting off with Malay-pickled kabeljoe with baba ganoush, which he raved about because it was beautifully spiced, then he had the farmed trout, quail egg, horseradish and again loved the dish. I don’t eat fish or raw meat and have just gotten over a bout of the Nora virus, so had no appetite .... but still tucked into the celery root, caramelized curds and whey, hazelnut which was perfectly light, just the right food for a sensitive tummy.
We both had the Karoo lamb, dukka with harissa... just beautifully done.
The desserts are not too sweet so the full fruit flavours comes through. I had the pineapple, cashew, fudge and my husband tucked into his favourite... caramelized apple pannekoek, rum coconut ice cream.
All sublime ... whilst overlooking beautifully manicured gardens.

We enjoyed every second of the long leisurely Sunday lunch at Camphors a few weeks ago, and can only apologize to staff for being last to leave. It was very hard to tear ourselves away!
Really exceptional service made the experience the best we've enjoyed in the Cape so far. Pat hits the tone perfectly with his professionalism, knowledge and customer care. We felt in very good hands throughout lunch.
Food was, without exception in our group of 6, beautifully created and delicious.
The whole experience was sophisticated without being pretentious or overly showy. No gimmicks, over embellishments or chef's zealous egos on display.
I will return often, bring friends and will highly recommend for a vineyard visit where the menu is created around the wine; the setting is breathtaking and the team care about their customers. This is hospitality at its best.
