A NICE MID RANGE PLACE IN THE BEACH’S BEST POSITION

I was trudging thru KHANOM TOWN from the highway intersection 2km west (how come no motorcycle taxis?). After several tries I found an English speaker – said the beach was directly 1 km ahead – 2km later I arrived. GOLDEN BEACH HOTEL was at the end of the road. My prior stop was CAMPING in ANG THONG ISLAND NATIONAL PARK so I was looking for a beachside base to explore the region with more comfort than a tent (or my usual backpacker bungalow). GBH looked promising. Room and tariff seemed OK – sure there are newer, flasher places along this loooong beach, but tired from walking in 35+C, I couldn’t be bothered finding out if flasher=better value.

This is a Thai style midrange hotel. Styling 60s western but it’s probably abt. 20 years old – beginning to show a bit of wear and tear but not too bad. Best position** and style suggests it’s the earliest upmarket resort on the long KHANOM aka NA DAN beach. There are now about a dozen other upmarket places plus a few budget resorts along the 7+km of sand. More info in my review on TRIPADVISOR’S separate KHONOM BEACH page.
Despite being a bit older my room was spacious, clean, good aircon and fully equipped. There’s a gym, beachfront rim pool, nice foyer and other public areas, inexpensive rental bicycles and great staff. A free shuttle to town and free WIFI (worked best in foyer). 1100baht high season pretty good – breakfast 200 extra.

Breakfast was in the large dining room – Friday a set AMERICAN (continental option) + unlimited coffee/tea, toast and juice. Not bad for 200b. On the weekend a Thai corporate group arrived and with 50%+ occupancy there was a full buffet. Not as mind blowing as expensive western oriented joints’, but pretty good – I was still paying 200b.
For other meals I used the hotel’s beachfront BAR AND GRILL with a huge range of dishes including lotsa inexpensive stull at prices making budget GULF ISLAND meals pricey. Want to go upmarket? No shortage including plenty of seafood dishes. Outlook from beachfront tables great. Staff excellent. Corporate group loved this place – Thais don’t sunbathe or swim: their idea of hanging at the beach is plenty of beer and food at a beachfront restaurant. Not crazy.
There are other restaurants along the beach road and in town – but a bit far to walk.

RENTAL BICYLES – 100b a day, good condition. I checked waterfalls and beaches to the south and found a gem 15km away – check my review on TRIPADVISOR’s separate AO THONG YEEE page.

THE TOWN – KHANON is small for a main regional town but busy. Main St runs north south. The 7/11 is about 50m on the left, south of the main (only traffic light) intersection. Motorcycle taxi guys hang around this area. The minibus station is way north abt 800m on the same side but drivers pick up and drop in town central.

GETTING THERE
FROM THE GULF ISLANDS – catch a SEATRAN ferry – minibuses head south from its DONSAC mainland pier to NAKON SI THAMMARAT – will drop you after 20km at a highway intersection 2km west of town. 120b v 700 for a taxi (but latter probably right to resort).
To get you right into town cheaply, catch one of the waiting pier buses into SURATHANI’s bus station 2 (TASET 2) and transfer to a minibus for KHANOM’s minibus station. Much the same total cost – takes longer.
FROM SURATHANI (70km) – as above.
FROM BANGKOK, PHUKET, TRANG – get to SURATHANI and proceed as above. You can BUS, FLY or TRAIN into SURAT – airport and station outside town, frequent shuttles to TASET 2.
There is also one express coach a day from BANGKOK’s STH BUS STATION to KHANOM.
FROM THE SOUTH – fly, bus, train into NAKON S T and catch a minibus 90km to KHANON.

**BEST POSITION? – yep, central on the beach and closest beach hotel to town.

MY RATING – despite my effusive review I would normally give an AVERAGE rating – on the basis the Thais do ALL these midrange places equally well. But I’m adding a star to ABOVE AVERAGE because of its superior position.

Hope the above helps your planning for the KHANOM area,

Traveling with two adults and two children 6 and 10. Room 512. Great view, updated room. Some rooms I heard and saw are not updated yet. Bath tub with shower, very nice pool, great size for kids, this is a very quite hotel , food is amazing , breakfast buffet included in price . You cannot beat under 100 dollars for 4 people with breakfast. We had pool to ourselves. Staff are awesome in hotel and restaurant . Room gets cleaned everyday and made everyday . We love it here. We saw the dolphins with Dang and Khanom fishing and dolphin tours. They are incredible!
The beach here is not really the type to lay around on. A lot of waves and a lot of garbage because of storms and there is
Not really a beach clean up person at hotel. The only thing I feel the hotel should do is organize the beach front. That is very important. I know it would be a daily job, but it would pay off. We are already planning a return trip to the Golden Beach.

We travel between Malaysia and Koh Samui in Thailand quite a lot. Thus we often have to sleep over before we take a ferrie to Koh Samui. This time we decided to try out the Khanom Golden Beach Resort. The rooms were really dated but big. We requested a baby cot and received a steel cage like cot, really not good. The breakfast was Ok. The pool is really damaged and misses a lot of tiles. Looks like it must have been a great hotel to stay at in the 90's, not much has been done since. If you get a room with a view then it is pretty good.

Room Tip: Book in advance

The hotel is right on a magnificent and almost endless beach. Most rooms have balcony views of the sunrise over the Gulf of Thailand, together with great mountain views.
The restaurant & bar are charming and also literally on the beach.
The pool overlooks the sea, the rooms are spacious and staff helpful. The hotel is reasonably priced, but a little refurbishing wouldn't go astray.

Upon arriving at the hotel, I was very impressed by it's size, but quickly discovered the interior and rooms were rather dated and a little sad. That being said, it was clean, moderately priced and set on the most beautiful of white sand beaches. That by itself was awesome. The rooms had pleasant accommodation including a balcony with sea view and a small sofa that was comfortable to relax. The bathroom, however, could do with some upgradding --- shower was old and water spray was minimal. The breakfast buffet was decent, but set up was constantly running low or unavailable. The seafood restaurant directly across from hotel had many choices and the food was decent.

Room Tip: Most rooms have balconies with sea views.
